rendering my footage in a 24p timeline

So, I shot a bunch of footage in 24pa mode. I captured it and moved it into my 24p timeline, and for some reason premiere tells me i must render the footage.

Before I render, the footage is all interlaced - after I render it seems to be progressive. I noticed that the video clips themselves claim they are 29.97fps as opposed to 24p. To me, this seems to explain why it would need to render in a 24p timeline. Do I need my clips to say 24p in order to avoid rendering on the 24p timeline?

This leads me to believe that perhaps I captured my video incorrectly? The capture settings aren't very detailed in pp2.0 - i have the option of doing DV, HD, or HD-SDI capture. I shot with the DVX, so I chose DV. How can I capture 24p clips so that they don't need to be rendered on a 24p timeline?

As far as I'm aware, your footage doesn't need to be flagged as 24p. Premiere should automatically be able to interpret the mode you shot it in. Is it possible you shot in 24P standard instead? Then premiere would always want to render out your footage when you dropped it into the 24P timeline. I'm willing to bet that's the case based on what you've said.

so, i have concluded that premiere never works with actual 24p video files. All footage captured by premiere is going to be 29.97 - and the 24p conversion is done from within the software, within the timeline itself. if your computer cant keep up, its going to need to render that footage before it can play it back at the true 24 frames per second.

this is my conclusion. correct me if you think i'm wrong.

there must be a reason premiere wants to render the footage. All the red bar means is that if your computer meets system requirments it is garenteed too play back in realtime if the red bar isn't there. So if you are getting a red bar its not because premiere detects your computer not to be fast enough. if you are editing 24pa dv footage in a 24p dv timline then there should not be a red bar unless there is a filter on the footage or if your footage is 1.2 PAR and your timeline is set to .9

i think it wants to render because my footage is 29.97 and the timeline is 24. Even though its 29.97 footage, its still 24pa, just with the 2332 thing still there. its only true 24p once it renders on the timeline.

You are correct that Premiere is going to be capturing 29.97 video files, but when you look at them in Premiere, they will already have the pulldown applied to them.

If you have a 24p timeline and you shot 24pa, you will never have to render your footage unless you apply an effect/transition, etc. Premiere will show it to be a 23.976 file, but if you look at the same avi file's properties in, say, windows media player, it will say it is 29.97. The only 24p footage that has to render in a 24p timeline in premiere is 24p standard.
