Selling my homemade adapter

Hey folks. I've been out of the loop on the DIY board for a long time. Many people here have been so helpful and I appreciate the help they've given me. I finished an adapter several months ago. It's been really fun to use, but it's time to part with it. So I'm putting it up for sale for $200. This will include a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens that is in really good shape. If you just want the adapter I'll do it for $150. The "camera end" of the adapter has a 72mm ring so it will work with any camera that accepts 72mm filters. I've only tested it with my DVX100A. I don't have my pictures of the unit uploaded yet but I will tomorrow. It's not much to look at, but it does the job. There's footage available here. Please right click and download or it will take forever to stream. This is just some basic footage. If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

Here's a picture of the unit for anyone interested. :D

I can't believe this hasn't sold...

I think your footage looks great. I'd buy if I had a camera...

Thanks folks. This is just about sold, just waiting on some transfer issues to settle out. I was wondering if anyone else was interested in an adapter with this same basic design? The major change would be a MUCH better GG. In this particular adapter that I am selling I used a Nikon D screen, which I have been happy with. I haven't had any grain issues, at least not in live footage. If you REALLY stop down the Nikon lens you can see the grain pattern that would show up, but I've never found it to be a problem. Anyway, I just thought I'd throw that out there for anyone interested in a cheap adapter. Because of the improved GG a new one would be about $250. But I don't want this to go down like so many other adapter ideas that have been mentioned. I've got the design, I've built it, I can make it in higher quantities, but I don't want to build them unless I have orders. Any feedback would be helpful. I realize there are a lot of competing adapters out there, so this will probably just be something I do if there is interest in it.

Also, others have asked why I am selling it. I need the money for school next semester, and I'm finally setting my priorities straight. Unfortunately that means sacrificing good video gear. :(

Sorry to post again right after my own post. Just wanted everyone to know that I am going to make a batch of these. I've already got some interested parties, so I am going to order parts here shortly. I'll take three more people. Total cost will be $185, no lens included. The adapter will accept Nikon F-mount lenses, no other mounts at this time. If anyone is interested feel free to PM me for details. Please keep in mind that the GG and achromat that will be used will be even higher quality than those used in the clip already posted above in this thread.

Any Idea what the postage cost to Sydney Australia (Bondi Beach 2026).. may cost?

Also what achromats (brand) are you using ?
Thanks Zacc

Postage down to Sydney would be at least $25, and that's for shipping that would take 4-6 weeks. Yuck. For about $33 I could send it Airmail parcel post and it would be there in 4-10 days. Interested? I'd prefer not to say what achromats at this time as my supply line is rather limited. It is a good quality achromat from a trusted optic manufacturer. I'm sure the name will surface as these units get distributed. It is an achromat though, and not just a cheap macro.

I've filled four slots already. Anyone else interested before I order parts? No pressure, just wondering. I'm really not looking to make giant profits off of this. I just think it's cool that I could learn how to make one of these. And after learning so much from the forum I'd like to give something back.

Against my better judgment, I'll talk about that. With the current components it's around $160 in terms of production. So I'm not making much off of these, especially considering that I'll have to pay shipping. But it's fun to make them and it brings in a little bit, plus it helps other people out. I might upgrade the achromat again, it will depend on test results. Any other questions please feel free to ask them.

Actually, the 72mm thread is from a step down ring. The next element in the adapter IS 58mm. So you could just take the step down ring off to use it with a VX2100 or I could send you an adapter without one. Interested?

just a question, i dont know much about adapters,"why im looking to buy one and not build one" haha, but if you take away the adapter, wont that change the distance from the cam lens to what it projecing on in the adapter. like i said i dont know too much so it might not change anything at all haha. also was the footage you shot in 24p or whatnot. thanks man.

Like J said, the change would be very minor. Also, that particular distance doesn't matter as much as you have to zoom your camera into the image on the focusing screen. So altering that distance a fraction doesn't really hurt. If you change the distance between the 35mm lens and the focusing screen/GG then you're in trouble, but that's a whole different story.

Yeah, that footage was shot in 24pA. I'll be putting up some more footage as soon as I get a chance. I'm moving this weekend so things are a bit crazy. But I'll try to snag some more footage on my lunch break or something.

yeah man im definetly interested then, hey if possible if you shoot any more footage could you possibly just shoot with out 24p or whatnot, just so it would a tab bit close to what im working with haha you are pretty much the savior ive been waiting for eh hahaha, thanks.

Well, I won't take the title but thanks for your appreciation. :D I'll shoot some more footage in 24p, 30p and 60i for your comparison as soon as I get a chance. The 60i should give you a better feel for the footage you'd get with it. I've seen decent 60i footage shot with adapters. Definitely gives it a more film like feel, even if it's not quite as good as 24p. ;)
