Barry- is this the OTG you mean?

It came, and offloads just fine. Does take about 7-8 minutes, but it has worked well for what I'm using it for. I am not sure I would trust it for important footage, but it sure has been handy since I got it.

When you download a new card, does it make a new folder on the drive? Just thinking how I would be able to download several cards before I would be able to get back to a computer to manage the files.

Thanks,

Yes, sequential new folders, each with the complete contents of the P2 card in it. Download the same card three times, expect three new folders on the drive. No chance of over-writing the data.

Jim,

Thanks for the quick answer. Sounds like a good low cost solution.

Am I right in that all I need is a OTG USB enclosure for it to work? I looked for the one reffered to by Barry at the beginning of the thread and I couldn't find it.

Also will it work with 7200 rpm drives? I understand that they can be troublesome when it comes to bus powering them because of the power requirements to keep up the higher RPM's.

Thanks,

Dan Weber

There is no bus power from the HVX. You'd want a self-battery-powered enclosure.

Any USB-OTG enclosure would work.

7200rpm drives work, but don't seem to make any difference in offload performance. The bottleneck appears to be in the USB-OTG protocol somehow; I've got two different USB-OTG enclosures and they both perform identically, and I've tried two different drives in them (5400 and 7200 rpm) and they still perform identically.

Jim, you mention Swissknife and faster speeds. I didn't quite follow - was this just formatting speed or transfer speed also? Does the dump from HVX receive a speed gain?

MWAVE have the 40g and 80g harddrive option at the same price. Is there any reason not to get the 80g? Thanks.

sry 4 my dumb question but this drives gives you the change to keep the p2 card away and just use this IDE drive????

i'm confused...

Barry,

I read in an earlier post that you tried a Firewire drive as well as the OTG USB drives.

I didn't realize that there was a Firewire drive with "host control" feature.

Could you just use a battery powered firewire drive enclosure? If you can do this is the transfer rate as slow as the OTG option?

Sorry if I am asking reduntant questions.

Yes, it seemed that my dumps after formatting with Swisskife were about a minute or so faster than before on a full 4gig card. Go figure.

No reason not to get the 80gig... a friend installed a 160 gig in his and it works fine.

Other points... a firewire enclosure that's self-powered is hard to find. That's why the interest in the USB option, but if you can find a firewire enclosure that has a battery you can do the same backup operation, but with the option to "verify" the data as well...
