Coolest male lead of all time.

Cally

I respect your affinity for the classics; one day we'll drink beers and smoke cigars and exchange blows on these films.

Marlon Brando-Last Tango in Paris
Marlon Brando- Apo. Now
Marlon Brando-On the Waterfront
Paul Newman-Hombre
Jean-Marc Barr-Big Blue
Gotta sleep...

i cant believe no one else has put james dean but me.. he was the man who created the term cool. In the 50's cool was epitomized by James Dean. Everyone rushed to emulate him with his leather jacket and cigarettes.

James Dean, though great, emulated every single aspect of his "coolness" from Brando - Dean absolutely worshiped the ground he walked on.

the coolest... without thinking...

Steve McQueen - Bullitt
Chow Yun-Fat - The Killer
William Holden - The Wild Bunch
Terrence "Tell them I'm poo pooing coming!!!!" Stamp - The Limey
Roddy Piper & Keith David - They Live

Good list.

Terance Stamp in the Limey is so good. Soderberg's greatest film. By far.

And though I am a huge fan of classic American icons, like Cary Grant, Bogey, etc. Chow Yun Fat may just be the greatest movie star ever to live. He is exponentially cooler than any action star America's ever had, and can hold a gun like no other.

But ****, They Live should have been Kurt Russell!!!! I dunno why he didn't do it, but damn. And Keith David you simply do not **** with. That is rule number one in the world. One of my favorite character actors of all time. Keith David rules.

I don;t know about Jack BUrton Barry, but MacREady in The Thing or Snake Plisken are all ranking 6 and 7 !

Dude...

"Jack, aren't you even gonna kiss her goodbye?"

Jack: "Naw."

Come on, Jack Burton was the pinnacle of the Carpenter/Russell working relationship!

(oh, and a few others for The Coolest Male Lead of all time):

Charlton Heston in "The Ten Commandments" and "Planet Of the Apes"
David Hasselhoff in "the ooga chaka video"
William Shatner in Star Trek

Gotta agree with Terence Hill, don't know how I missed that one. And Henry Fonda is just amazing in absolutely everything.

I'm disappointed in all of you. The coolest man of all time is THIS guy.

You know it. I know it. The whole world knows it. Nuff said. Now LOCK this thread!

Wow; so many great roles (tons of which were not recognized by the whore organization that is the Academy.)

We should compile the DVX TOP 100 Best Roles of all time

That would be fun to do, Hudson.

The Best Way would be to have everyone post their ten favorite characters (and ONLY ten) along with the films that they are from. Then we could tally up the numbers to establish a ranking/list (though I'd suggest 50 instead of 100.)

I'll get on it later.

I'm seeing a disapointing amount of repetition. I'm not going to name anybody whose alrealdy been named. So, much as I respect the classics, what about:

Christian Bale in American Psycho. I haven't seen Christian Bale deliver a single bad performance. Batman Begins, Equilibrium...The Machinist (a standout role).
Mickey Rourke as Marv in Sin City.
Jean Reno in Leon (The Professional).
Jason Statham as Turkish in Snatch, his cavalier address of Tommy at the end of the movie compared to the potential gravity of the situation was pretty cool. Though he wasn't the coolest character in the movie; Brick Top, Bullettooth Tony and Boris the Bullet-Dodger come to mind, with honorable mentions to Tyrone and Avi.
Brad Pitt in Fight Club.

Honorable mentions to Anotonio Banderas in Desparado, Mel Gibson in Payback, and Adrian Grenier as Vinnie Chase on Entourage.

Great picks from all you guys. Really. Hey Gally, what about Costner in Postman? When he came over the horizon all airbrushed and the sunset's in the background to give him more color. Toup firmly in place. And people are dying because it's the end of times but nobody cares because the Mail's gettin' thru!

You guys are all so young!

I like

Gary Cooper in Meet John Doe
Clark Gable in The Misfits
Errol Flynn in Robin Hood
Cary Grant
James Stewart

you get the picture!
