Examined my goals, now, best package for $1200

I am mainly getting into documentaries but am starting with some corporate docs, a no budget music video for a friend and maybe some wedding videos. I am looking to spend around 1200 on a whole audio package including:
Wireless
Shotgun
Hyper Cardioid
Field Mixer
Boom pole
Cables

What are the best buys for this budget? Specifically, cheap but rugged field mixers? Thanks for the help.

Now wait a minute Tim. With some Radio Shack wireless, a Rolls mixer, painter's pole, AT 897, and Oktava I think he could easily come in under $1200. Maybe Matt will outfit him with some kickass cables to round out this kit.

J/K, read thru the threads and see if you don't adjust your budget or scale down your kit plans a bit. Feel free to ask follow up questions.

Cheers

Hey Wabbit, why settle for a Rolls mixer? He could get an 8 channel Behringer that even runs on batteries. That would make his kit really special. And hey, those painters poles can be pretty lightweight....easy on the boom ops shoulders and back, you know? ;-) And even better, he could get one of those Radio Shack cassette recorders and be able to run double system. Yay!

(Okay, I'm feeling very sarcastic today....please read the threads in the stickies and you will find a kit that will work for you).

you could get a Sound Devices mix-pre, an octava 012, a k-tek pole and some cables, that wold take you to, what, $700? help me out here guys, i'm not sure how much stuff costs over the pond, a lot less than here, thats for sure.

I am not sure how you would spend the remaining $500 for a shotgun AND wireless, you could only just buy either one of a usable quality.

I think for $600 you could get a Sennheiser G2, which come reccommended.

OR

spend the remaining $500 on a reasonableish shotgun.

either way, I think you'd have to spend a little more, or sacrifice the wireless for the moment.

check used , the 1200 is about how much you need for normal microphone with wind protection

Well first forget the wireless. The rest you could minimally do if you get lucky on eBay, maybe.

Oleg, How did you get back under 1000 posts? Are you getting docked now instead of banned? ;~) Maybe it's like the Italian football, were you post fixing?

at4073a kit w/ shockmount $570
mk012 hypercardioid $180
basic alumimum fish pole $90
2 x 25' xlr cables $40
SD MixPre $650
1 roll gaff tape $10 1 1/4" to 5/8 light stand to microphone stand adapter $8 (use your small light stands rather than carry mic stands)

Total $1548

That will "get the job done".

(Use the gaff tape to tape the cable to the fishpole to prevent clanging)
(Use the 18 inch cable in the b&h kit to connect the mixpre to the cam)

Smartest thing to do (that I've figured out so far) is to skip the wireless first. You can ALMOST always shoot with a boom, and you can ADD wireless later if you find the money.

Second, skip the SD MixPre. No, don't get something cheaper, just use the preamps in the cam. FOR NOW. You can ADD the SD as soon as you find the money. What do they pay for giving plasma these days?
With the money saved, you may want to get a longer (still aluminum) fish pole. Or even a carbon fiber one. And this basic kit is under your $1200.

When you get the money (or when you get lucky on ebay) pick up the SD MixPre. And when you decide recording audio to the cam limits your quality, you can get a DAT. (I expect it will be a while before I reach the level of skill in audio where the recorder is what's holding me back).

Well, the first time you shoot outdoors, make sure to have a new pack of gym socks. You'll wind up using them, then buying some kind of wind protection for the mic.

This is not exactly the kit I've assembled. But it's close. Now I have a lot of work to do practicing and building skills to operate this stuff effectively. And you will too.
