Top 10 Films of 1979...

1979...

:crybaby: It was a sad, sad year for film buffs the world over, when Duke Wayne rode off into his final sunset :crybaby: - The mighty Willie Stargell led the Pirates over the Orioles for the World Series title and the unstoppable Steelers won their forth Super Bowl in a span of only six seasons...what a year to be a Pittsburgher - ESPN officially began broadcasting

Please try to do a top 10 in order (hard as it may be) with an optional two or three "honorable mentions".

I rarely include comedies in my overall best lists. They must do one of the following to be considered:

A) work as something grander in scale than just comedy...work on another level (Take Ghostbusters, A Fish Called Wanda or 1941 for instance)

-or-

B) be one of the best Goddamn comedies of all time...as in being on the Callaghan top 20 (Life of Brian or Airplane! are prime examples)

-or-

C) both A & B (Some Like It Hot and Dr. Strangelove meet this criteria)

...Unfortunately, The Jerk (which is classic Martin and quite funny) meets none of the above IMO

On this we diverge. If a movie is one of the best movies of the year, I don't care if it is a drama, western, comedy or even *gasp* a musical. A good movie is a good movie and shouldn't be judged on a sliding scale...:) It is thinking similar to this that makes it almost impossible for an actor to win an Oscar for a comedic role.

Stalker (andrei tarkovsky)
Apocalypse Now (francis ford coppola)
Escape From Alcatraz (don siegel)
Being There (hal ashby)
Manhattan (woody allen)
Hardcore (paul shrader)
Amator (krzysztof kieslowski)
The Muppet Movie (james frawley)
Star Trek: The Motion Picture (robert wise)
Alien (ridley scott)

I used to like Being There, and a few years ago it would definitely have made my top ten for 1979, but it just hasn't worn well on me lately...:undecided

Cygnet74, looking at your list, I think you're going soft on us...:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

I am very surprised that ours are the only two list so far to include The Muppet Movie. That film is a great big ball of pure entertainment. Jim Henson was/is truly timeless. What gives?

Edit:
Star Trek: The Motion Picture on the other hand...
eek. I gotta side with the trekies on this one, who say that the franchise really started with The Wrath Of Khaaaaan http://www.khaaan.com/ (thanks for that link, David)
