Vegas Audio Bitrate, Workflow, and Sony ACID questions.

Hi and thanks to David, Barry, and all of you for gracious help on these forums.

I have 4 questions - one about workflow, two about Vegas settings, and one about Sony ACID.

1. Workflow:
I've shot over 20 hours for a Hobo Documentary in 24padvanced, using Panasonics' 16x9 conversion Lens. In the past I've first rendered the captured files into smaller clips, and then edited the movie from that. Here is my question:

Following the above method, should I first render the smaller clips into uncompressed AVI, or go ahead and use Vegas' 24p-widescreen 2-3-3-2 render setting? Should I be concerned about quality loss? - talk to me like I'm new.

2. Vegas Settings - "Maintain Aspect Ratio"
Since I shot in 4:3 with a conversion lens, I can get the appropriate look by turning off the "maintain aspect ratio" switch on the clips I'm editing. Is there any "macro" way to do this in advance? Maybe a script?

3. Vegas Settings - "Audio Bitrate"
What is the proper audio bitrate settings in Vegas for the DVX100a? I currently have it set to 16 by 44100, which seems to be default. Should I up either rate, or will I merely be adding file size and processing time by doing so?

4. Sony ACID Pro 6 - "Video Edit"
I've been playing around a bit on a different project with Sony ACID music looping software, which includes a minimal track editor. Just wondering if anyone had experience with this, as I'm considering doing my primary editing for a small film in ACID.

Thanks again,
Andrew J. Holden

1) I think you're wasting your time by doing that (rendering smaller clips). Make sure you have scene detection enabled when you capture. Then, anything smaller you want to work with can be done creating subclips in the Trimmer. Or, even quicker still, just work with the longer clips on the timeline.

But if you really need to do that, no, uncompressed doesn't gain you anything except really big file sizes. Doing a DV to DV render will result in virtually no lost quality.

2) All you need to do is go into the clip properties and change the pixel aspect ratio to 1.21. You should then be able to copy the clip and then Paste Event Attributes onto the rest of them. Do that first, though.

3) The default bitrate is just fine.

4) ACID isn't a video editor -- its tiny video toolset is not enough. Conversely, Vegas has almost all of the tools of ACID.

Ummmm... Doesn't DV usually record at 16/48? I don't think 16/44.1 is the default for DV, but maybe I could be wrong?

David, #2 - Copying and pasting event attributes onto new clips after changing the aspect ratio to 1.21 - doesn't seem to work. I go through the motions but nothing changes - could the "maintain aspect ratio" switch be blocking this?

any ideas? Thanks

Baaahhh! No, that's right. You can't copy/paste those attributes. I was thinking of something else.

There's probably a way to script it, but I don't really have the time to look into it right at this moment. Try going to www.vasst.com and browse their available scripts. They might have something.
