Why does rendering 4 min. of footage take 4 hrs.

I have just completed a music video and after putting together the final edit with minor effects such as fades and make a black and white effect on one clip it takes Vegas right at 4 hrs to render a complete video? I am rendering a .avi file format and then making a dvd of the final edit in my NERO program. What am I doing wrong is it my settings that I'm using to cause my rendering to take so long. I'm still pretty new with Vegas 6.0

Save as type: Video for windows (avi) NTSC 24p inserting 2-3-3-2 pulldown and then save project markers in media file. These are the settings that I know of...
are there any other setting I should be aware of before rendering my projects? What would be the fastest format to render in so that I could then pull of the file in Nero and create my DVD?

Well, for starters, unless Nero can remove 2-3-3-2 pulldown and make a 24p DVD, you want to render in 2-3 pulldown.

Anyway, with these render problems you've been having, I'd seriously look at sweeping your system for viruses. Unless you have older, slow processor, I don't see why you should be getting these kinds of render times.

Though you never did answer -- which specific effect are you putting on the clip to make it black and white?

My original clips are 24p with the dvx100. This process takes about 4 hours way before I even load the file in Nero... this is all in Vegas.

Are you using Magic Bullet? I've had 6 hour render times for 4 minutes worth of footage when using MB.

I just did a 10 second render that had extreme motion blur on 1 track and parent tracking, chroma key on 2 tracks, and some panning on a jpg background - it took 1 hour. (only to find out I needed to tweak it in a couple frames) I feel your pain!

Yeah I like Vegas.. its a simple NLE to operate but this rendering process is ridiculous.. I have to say when it's done the quality is beautiful.... But I know something can be done.. I do remember when I rendered a 19 min. short i completed with really no effects at all it only took about 1 hour to render so i guess this has to be do to effects and such.

Even an hour for a 19-minute short with no effects is long, if you're rendering to DV. You should get at least real-time for DV to DV. What's your processor?

I think I don't have everything turned off in the background while I'm rendering.. I'm going to double check that also. This rendering time takes the fun out of shooting. And I will do a virus sweep with Norton Anti Virus also. I will let you know what happens. Thanks

I always turn norton off while rendering.. question? I use the letterbox 24p setting within the dvx100 and when I go to render I select 24p dv widescreen inserting 2-3-3-2 pulldown. Am I doing this correctly?

Unless you're cropping, that will result in a stretched image with black bars. I assume that's not what you want.

Don't bother with Letterbox mode if you want widescreen. Shoot full frame and crop in Vegas. You're going to have to anyway, and you've got more to work with if you don't put those black bars in your image.

If you're rendering to watch (which includes going to DVD), then use 2-3 pulldown.

I'll give that a try and see.. I really didn't want widescreen which I thought was letterbox.. Well still learning, I'm going to give the 2-3 pulldown a try versus the widescreen template. That would be 24p ntsc- 2-3 pulldown right.
