Want to be a better artist?

Well I do. I've got a 2D animation class next semester, and I realized that I haven't drawn anything in a loooong time. I took today as a time to try some figure drawing/ learning to illustrate with my Wacom tablet.

I'm going to do as much as I can every day, and log it all- hoping that in a while I'll be able to see some improvement.

If anyone is interested, I'd love to have some company while trying to relearn how to draw. (IE anyone else want to pick up a pencil/ wacom and share anything?)

Here's some of the better (better is such a relative term) ones from today.

That's really good stuff TC. And you can do that with a tablet. (I stink at drawing, especially with a tablet).

Is it a film animation class(i.e. Oxberry), or a digital class? If its anything like the one I took (film) a few years ago, we didn't do a whole lot of actual drawing (except for the line and cell animation blocks). The majority of what we animated with the Oxberry were cut-outs (i.e. South Park), objects and such. The Prof. understood that most of us film students couldn't draw beyond stick figures and made it so that drawing skills weren't as important as understanding how to make smooth animation happen.

I'll try to make myself draw something with the old Wacom and post it here, but I'm sure it will be more of a comedic exhibition as opposed to one of skill.:)

No, this is an actual hard-core 2d animation course. Handdrawn walk cycles and everything. Very exciting.

Definitely draw something and put it up. Use good reference- it helps tremendously.

Hehe.. I got a 'D' in the only animation class I ever took in college. I went on to
get get a chance to animate R2D2 and spent way too long working at Disney :)

Keep drawing, but don't loose sight of your personal brass ring... its just a class
and if you lack the drawing skills, focus on the technical execution.

Those are real good TC and I'm with PK on #3. Not that specifically asked us to vote, but if you had....#3! I really suck in Wacoland but I may just pull it out and go all abstract on ya:)

when you drew those were you looking at a reference, or just from your imagination?

EDIT: "Use good reference" lol, missed that...

I posted this in another thread, but i'll show it here to, as I drew it with my Wacom...pretty quick. This is fun...I might do another tonight.

Good stuff TC. I have done figure drawing for many years, but am still challenged a bit with the tablet. I have some of my work up on my site if you want to take a peek.

If you are interested, Burne Hogarth has put out some excellent figure drawing books. They are great to open up and draw from.

Also check out Virtual Pose 3, which is a great figure drawing/sculpting reference.

I will see if I can get some time to post some drawings along with you.

I tried looking at the work on your site snodart. The images weren't loading.

I can see them on the preview page, but when I click to enlarge them- no dice.

Wow. Thanks for the info TC. I have no clue why. I think my host changed some PHP settings recently. Crap. Time to do some coding.

EDIT: Well, that was a quick fix. Should be working now. Thanks again.

First attempt at an eye- it's okay.

snodart- it works now. You've got some great stuff on there- I love the expression on the soldier's face. I'm definitely going to pick up some of those books.

Hey, good stuff! Now start learning to draw other objects and people besides good-looking women and you can pick up some extra cash doing story boards for directors...
