"if it's popular, it certainly can't be art"

I really hope no one here is following this adage. Give us a break.
who is??.. not me!.. i already posted: «if it's popular or not, it certainly CAN BE art.»

I find Ghostbusters to be a completely satisfying film. Truly, one of the best comedies of any time. Escapist Entertainment. Talk about a film that draws you in and let's you forget about it for awhile. Bill Murray’s performance is perfect in this film. In fact, all of the actors really shine in this. The script is great and the dialogue memorable.

To refer to it as Crap shows ignorance and a complete lack of taste in film comedy. If this is due to cultural differences, then that is a shame. I don't get Monty Python personally, but people swear by it; so I'm not going to bash it.

Or ..... Maybe you just don't get it.

Rottentomaotes gives it: 97%
IMDB: 7.6/10 (38,172 votes)

Let us try and be objective here. Or, you do get it and everyone else is insane. Unlikely.

Karate Kid is bubblegum, summer faire. Doesn't mean it is bad. In fact, it is another memorable film and a harmless tale of a young man coming of age. It is a good film. Calling it crap is a disservice.
your american way of being, it amuses me.. but be careful, i love america ok?..

there isn't one sole truth.. i'm afraid i'm not the first one saying this..

because there are people who are getting your beloved crap, it doesn't mean that others cannot get.. but we can get and dislike.. saying it's not gold!.. nor silver.. or not?

not you nor anyone here may add the "ignorance" label to anyone here.. coming from yours it's amusing.. you don't know me so, mod or not though respectfully and specially as mod, you mustn't walk on the thin ice..

i have my ideas, you have yours but i didn't more than express my ideas.. do you? because you're mod, that's my turn to say properly it's a disservice..

also you're discussing tastes?.. your words: «and a complete lack of taste in film comedy.» wth?? :D

Are you implying that because it was studied as a film student it must be held in a higher regard ? Are you implying that because you were a film student this is supposed too mean something (I'm asking)?
:dankk2:you asked.. it's true.. it means where people are studying the Motion Picture as science, Blood Simple has cinematic properties, Karate Kid or Ghostbusters are just good "jokes".

if they have any value of science it's only because they're coming from the formula..

imho, not even as good ones.. my personal taste? maybe yes maybe not.. therefore, this time it's subjective and not necessarily as an objective truth.

I'd put money on audiences talking about Ghostbusters’s over Blood Simple in 50 years.
you're wrong but as i posted: «it's my hint.. not yours..» about 20 years, they aren't 50.. quite different.. if you wish, return to 1956 and can you give us any similar example?

I'm with Blaine. Best and Favorite can be two different things
so, you must add my name too because i said the same.. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

and I'll take favorites anyday over Best.
that's your right..

It is all subjective, so please don't tell anyone it is not.
who is saying differently?..

It comes across as pretentious crap when you act otherwise.
following what i posted being the motion picture a science.. are you a scientist?.. it comes across as pretentious crap when you act otherwise - period

On a liner note; and respectfully:

As far as chiming in but NOT posting your own list ?
i already posted why not and why these lists can have value of entertainment but there is who has the disagree right.

because the same reasons i cannot subscribe these lists.

i couldn't see all the 1984 production.. do you?.. including all the world production?.. or are you thinking the motion picture as a north american exclusive?

then how could i know the top 10?.. otherwise, i can know those aren't.. i saw it.. as i posted..

Do us a favor and rethink your approach. We encourage you to join in on the reindeer games; not snub your nose at it and then openly criticize people’s choices. (This is a hint)
you're wrong.. i don't snub anything.. it's a question of methodology.. even if Blaine insisted in a cultural affair as well you mentioned, if you wish, here it can be the case but only here.. as a hint..

finally, about «reindeer games»: i will not discuss with you sixteen years of film education/training and professional work into film aesthetics.

to the scorsese fanboys like myself, i add "the" my best:

i'm sorry but it's larger than 1984.. :)

loook you know if a movie is good or not, it doesnt have to be artistic, it just needs to be entertaining somehow.

Karate Kid: Giving it all you got type movie; going the distance fun to watch and great performance from the late Pat Morita. ala ROCKY type.

Amadeus: Beautiful piece of work brought to life to tell of a child like man and vengence.

I love them both.

not matter what if the movie entertained you i think you can find the enjoyment or art in there some how. so good or bad, you like it! doesnt matter if others don't.

The "Ghostbusters" script is a lot tighter and a lot more developed than the "Blood Simple" script.

The acting in Ghostbusters is better than the acting in Blood Simple.

While it's difficult to directly compare many things in films of different genres, I can say this -- "Ghostbusters" is among the very top greats of comedy.

"Blood Simple" is at best a "pretty good" drama. But it's the Coens' first film, so genius isn't to be expected.

interesting point.. the acting stuff..

important..

a cultural affair also but not to me..

aesthetically speaking, it's not a major one.. maybe because it's a cultural one.. however i disagree with the minor interest besides the film studies theory..

good acting can be a distinctive factor..

Callaghan always reminds me of the great years in cinema when he starts these lists.

As far as films I havent seen that may have been good or great ? Oh well. I have a general theory when perusing the aisles at Blockbuster:

If you haven't heard of it, it probably isn't that good.

(Generally speaking)

And David Lynch sucks.

I axed it as it was pointless.

What no list still ? Come on. Give us a list or be deleted.
dear John Hudson

i'm sorry but i can't get no understanding.. :)

i'm afraid this non-verbal language can bring some noise to the communication and the idea would be to promote the participation and not anything else..

as it was posted.. a proper debate even if better as its own thread.. first, i asked if you remember.. and you agreed.. that's why it was posted there where i answered why i can't list anything if it goes against my own viewpoint about the subject.. there not here.

i'm :( mate

It's funny because this filmmaker1977 is a well-known professional in several areas of the movie business. I know him because he was my teacher before. And it's also interesting because he's used to be paid in order to programme for some important film festivals. It's weird... ah ah ah
