there aren't completion lists.. this competition mania is typical of our capitalist societies where all must have the respective number.. it can be proper for the price of money but it isn't typical of the art itself - period
Where does art begin and end? Pretentiousness loves to answer this one. Concerning competition and capitalist societies. It is the most democratic form there is...people will spend their money on something they want to see. What could be more democratic than that? If someone makes a steaming pile of excrement that they believe is the end all and be all of the art world, but no one is interested or it appeals to only a small elitest segment of society, does that make it better...I don't think so. I'm not using box office as the criterion of success but it certainly has its place. If you chose to ignore something popular, ("if it's popular, it certainly can't be art") that's your loss not mine. I still haven't seen your list of top movies for ANY year. If you choose, substitute the word favorite for best. Again, cultural differences. But it's easy to sit back and snipe without putting yourself out there. Until you have listed your favorites, you need not pontificate about your mighty "art."

again i agree.. however you can add what i was saying about code etc following my previous posts.. those tough  according callaghan..

It is the most democratic form there is...
i agree

people will spend their money on something they want to see.
art?

What could be more democratic than that?
nevertheless, the two aren't the same. sorry.. again.. but that's the hollywood error.. moneymakers not necessarily artmakers..

i'm with you..

"the" hollywood error..

I still haven't seen your list of top movie for ANY year.
as i posted before, i don't believe in these lists.

If you choose, substitute the word favorite for best. Again, cultural differences.
again.. not necessarily..

But it's easy to sit back and snipe without putting yourself out there. Until you have listed your favorites, you need not pontificate about your mighty "art."
you're wrong! i discuss ideas not moneymaking.. i don't see any other different idea crossing your lists besides some exceptions..

again: if you're writing about democracy don't we have our principle right to refuse your greed for classing? now, more than before, that's time to bring to this friendly debate those cultural differences that you are posting.. i mean: that's why i accept your favorite lists not "the" best titlesssssssssss..

By default you are implying a list when you complain that someone likes Ghostbusters more than Blood Simple because you don't agree with it. If art were you're only criterion, it wouldn't matter to you and you would not have replied in the first place. But you did reply interjecting your own bias.

"the" hollywood error..
if it's popular or not, it certainly CAN BE art.

i don't see any Citizen Kane there in these lists..

unless, Blood Simple?.. again, maybe not for all audiences but definitely for some audiences.. 50 years later maybe more than a few.. but i'd bet ghostbusters will be forgettable.. i'm sorry guys but this is just my hint.. not yours..

a black & white world.. a cultural issue indeed
When it comes to film, I'm looking to be entertained. If you want to send me a message be sure to pin it to an entertaining (read: engaging) story. A movie doesn't have to be a blockbuster to be entertaining. If you look through my picks of the different years, you'll find many movies that are "small" or independent movies. The one thing they ALL had in common...I found them entertaining. Entertain me, preach to me, do what you want BUT DON'T ****ING BORE ME!:furious3:

I'm still not sure what you're implying, perhaps you could elaborate.
a large audience requires an efficient formula well understood from all different sides.. when the industry embraces its aim, it's difficult to get differently in any way other than as specified in those guidelines.

it will be difficult to get that originality and complexity besides the good work even if executed.

secondly, because its own way of getting and cultural viewpoint, it's easiest "the" separate field between industry and art.. but there are other crossing points in the middle..

I've been following this important dispute. And, first of all, what can I say? I know this filmmaker1977 very well. I was his student. He is tough as CallaghanFilms posting just because he's an expert here. A person with special knowledge or ability who performs skillfully. One of his jobs. Then pal, may you be cool? Let your buddies in peace! Isn't it enough your lecturers massacres within your classes? :)

Cheers

I liked Amadeus. I enjoyed Temple of Doom too, but I think the Oscar went to the right film.

(How do you like that- I'm trying to get the thread back on track for once.)

Therefore you achieve a large audience at the expense of art? I think Spielberg, Coppola, Scocese, DePalma et.al. would heartily disagree with you.

unfortunately, the things aren't so simple than that.

but yeah, more or less, even spielberg, coppola, scorsese or de palma have been suffered with it..

on the other hand, besides these language restrictions, money can be artmaking too, it's true..

as filmmaker, i'm looking for it.. are you interested to be my finance provider? :D

"if it's popular, it certainly can't be art"

I really hope no one here is following this adage. Give us a break.

I find Ghostbusters to be a completely satisfying film. Truly, one of the best comedies of any time. Escapist Entertainment. Talk about a film that draws you in and let's you forget about it for awhile. Bill Murray’s performance is perfect in this film. In fact, all of the actors really shine in this. The script is great and the dialogue memorable.

To refer to it as Crap shows ignorance and a complete lack of taste in film comedy. If this is due to cultural differences, then that is a shame. I don't get Monty Python personally, but people swear by it; so I'm not going to bash it.

Or ..... Maybe you just don't get it.

Rottentomaotes gives it: 97%
IMDB: 7.6/10 (38,172 votes)

Let us try and be objective here. Or, you do get it and everyone else is insane. Unlikely.

Karate Kid is bubblegum, summer faire. Doesn't mean it is bad. In fact, it is another memorable film and a harmless tale of a young man coming of age. It is a good film. Calling it crap is a disservice.

and Blood Simple
that i studied when i was film student..

Are you implying that because it was studied as a film student it must be held in a higher regard ? Are you implying that because you were a film student this is supposed too mean something (I'm asking)?

-

I'd put money on audiences talking about Ghostbusters’s over Blood Simple in 50 years. It is one of the highest grossing films of all time at $291,000,000 and 20 some years later, Ghostbusters’s is the one being shown in syndication.

I'm with Blaine. Best and Favorite can be two different things and I'll take favorites anyday over Best.

I liked Amadeus. I enjoyed Temple of Doom too, but I think the Oscar went to the right film.

Well said. Probably a million examples of this.
-

It is all subjective, so please don't tell anyone it is not. It comes across as pretentious crap when you act otherwise.

On a liner note; and respectfully:

As far as chiming in but NOT posting your own list ? Do us a favor and rethink your approach. We encourage you to join in on the reindeer games; not snub your nose at it and then openly criticize people’s choices. (This is a hint)

Mr. John Hudson

you have responsabilities as mod here and even if you don't need it i can't subscribe your approach..

by now, i don't have time for answering..

later.. but only if you don't ban it even if this is a different opinion than yours..

i don't give a damn if all the people here are saying the same as you.. i have my opinion before reading yours..

respectfully but :( with your inputs plus your friends.. i'd like to know who is bashing who.. sad..

:)
