My team's gonna kick your butt!

Why do people follow sports teams with such vigor? Let’s take football. There are two teams and a ball. Each team has people who throw real well, catch real well, run real fast and so on. Two teams come together on a given day, one will win and one will lose…fifty fifty odds. Now, there are a few million fans rooting for team A, and they lose. Team b’s fans are rewarded with a win and all go berserk, drink twice as much beer as they normally would etc. At the end of the day, neither team a or team b have produced anything spectacular, nothing changed in the day to day world, we all still have to get up and go to work in the morning. Team b got the ball to the other end of the field more times than team a…That’s all that happened. What is it about this event that causes such uproar? And why does this event drive people to experience some sort of religious ecstasy I do not understand!!!

aah yes...the inevitable ponder of the extents of our nations sometimes odd interests. It's great to take in things like this and really examine them, to open your mind to WHY something exists, and things like that. The other day, I was thinking something along these lines...

ELECTRICITY! At one stage during the human races existence, people lived long, simple lives. Take the early native americans for example. Using primitive tools and breakthrough ideas of their time, they lived "comfortably." Could they have imagined in that a few hundred years, someone would come up with a way to control the strongest powers in the world!?!

Wikipedia says:
Electronics- The field of electronics is the study and use of systems that operate by controlling the flow of electrons (or other charge carriers) in devices such as thermionic valves and semiconductors. The design and construction of electronic circuits to solve practical problems is part of the field of electronics engineering, and includes the hardware design side of computer engineering.

WHAT!? I never seace to be amazed by what the human race can achieve, or on the other hand, what wierd things we can come up with. I feel you Mino...but now im going to bed.

I don't follow sports at all, and am inclined to agree to a point. However I can certainly see the value in team sports- I simply don't follow them.

I always love this Seifeld bit:

Loyalty to any one sports team is pretty hard to justify. Because the players are always changing, the team can move to another city- you're actually rooting for the clothes when you get right down to it. You know what I mean, you are standing and cheering and yelling for your clothes to beat the clothes from another city. Fans will be so in love with a player, but if he goes to another team, they boo him. This is the same human being in a different shirt, they *hate* him now. Boo! Different shirt! Boo.

Well done!

Man, it still creeps me out that there are people in this community that have hundreds of posts, and I've never seen them before.

My master's thesis was on theis subject. Would love to babble on but 1) I would come off as a pretensious schmuck, 2) I would get into politics, and 3) I would get into sexuality. Fascinating subject, though, IMO.

TC that was funny as hell. The downside of not watching TV is that I miss stuff like that...I also have no idea which dish soap produces the most bubbles.

I love sports! And I can't understand how a person can not get into them. Have you ever been to a live game? Of any sort? High School, College, Professional? I can understand if you don't get excited about watching them on TV... but I love going to games... you can just feel the energy and excitement. And maybe it's because my company covers a lot of sports and I know a lot about the backgrounds of the players. But I think it's more along the lines of what filmmakers do. You practice and practice your craft... you get as prepared as you can to shoot... you have all these passionate people along side of you who are working towards the same goal... and in the end if everyone works together you might come out of post with a win! How can you not get excited? Maybe it's more that you don't have a respect for what athletes do?

Yes I have been to a few games in my life but never caught the fever, I was always way more interested in how the crowd reacted to the game than the game itself. When it comes to what filmakers do, yes they practice their art and hone their skills to perfection and with luck, put out a masterpiece that is recieved well by the general public but only in certain circles will anyone really care. It is also not something throngs of people show up for during filming with air horns and a lot of aplause. I have respect for athletes as much as I have for doctors, lawyers, filmakers and bus drivers. In all walks of life there are people who do their job with passion and skill. For me, an athlete falls into that category...No more, no less! I get excited when I'm part of a team effort and that would no doubt apply to sports were I so inclined, but if I'm not involved or participating then I feel I must have something better to do than watch others compete ie get better at lighting my shots. I understand why people play the games, I just don't get why so many are driven to watch, follow and have mood shifts based on the win or loss.

Watching people beat each other and enjoying it is as old as man :). The gladatorial games of Rome are a great example. Somehow we humans get a kick out of watching other people suffer.

Of course, this doesn't explain why anyone in their right mind would watch, say, GOLF.....
