MK012 --> not the BBG, but the softie :)

That is correct people...I dare to recommend the use of the 5 mm Rycote softie over the Baby Ball Gag. I first ordered the BBG with the windjammer, but then it turned out to be bigger than I thought, and it looked amazingly stupid if mounted on-camera. It was so front heavy it almost ruined the shockmount. I returned it and got the 5 mm Softie that was recommended by Rycote and it works great. Excellent results outdoor so far, even in quite windy situations. And it is even cheaper as well...

The softie works well and is one of the solutions that Matt and others have made, but in general I think that the BBG & Windjammer is the best solution for booming and non camera mounted solutions. I think that the majority of people looking for the best quality audio avoid camera mounted whenever possible, anyways.

I agree on avoiding mounting the mic on camera when possible being the only line-in, but actually I think this combo works pretty well as a camera-mounted backup when running around and gathering material. Especially when you need some sound from the background, or when your just hoping to catch a moment etc...

5mm softie for mk012

5mm softie for mk012

Is there a specific B&H stock number for this? I noticed that there were several different versions for different mikes.

so you need to use the rycote windscreen and then the softie?

i'm used to using the rycote softies over the sennheiser 66, 416 etc. where the softie goes right over the mic with nothing else required.

can someone post a picture of their mk-012 with their windscreen mounted?

i'm shopping for a solution right now as i have two oktava mk-012's and right now i just have the cheap black one that i got from the sound-room.

i'm using them indoors on a boom and wind hasn't been an issue but at the very least the mic would look a LOT more professional if i had a better windscreen on it.

perception is reality and when you put an mk-012 at the end of a boom where people are experienced and used to seeing something like a sennheiser 416 with a softie the oktava looks mighty unimpressive!

I just got a softie from Shure...and even though it is big it mounts on the Oktava.

Smithy, your mouse emoticon is scaring me. When it tells me what my favorite cereal is I'm issuing a restraining order.

does that windscreen cover up the whole mic? it looks bigger than the oktava but there are no specs on the size of it.

i wish there was a way to add 3 or 4 inches of inert length to the oktava mk-012 so it would extend further from the shockmount.

almost tempted to use something like an inline connector when i don't need it just to extend the mic further out of the shockmount.

has anyone tried doing anything like this?

I covers almost half if pushed all the way in..no need to do it though since is fits pretty snug. With the cable sticking out the back..it should barely fit the KSSM mount but it can be done. As compared to the BBG well it holds up pretty good cutting down excessive noise.. I tried it using the mike without a softie and if you don't have a pop filter or a softie.. the sound clips. But of course you can get the BBG and it will be better but at 4 times the price. I chose to buy a boompole with the money I saved.

Ok, after reading all of the praise for the Oktava MK012, I think I am ready to buy one... but, a few questions first.

I am a one man show and have to rely on camera-mounted microphones. I will be working on a short doc project soon, and will be using the Oktava indoors for interviewing, and outdoors for run-and-gun shooting (handheld shooting, more than likely).

So, should I go with a shockmount + a foam windscreen (Shure A81WS)? Which shockmount? Will that be enough protection to prevent against most bouncing around and wind?

Thanks for the help.

I'd also be really interested in knowing which one you are talking about. Rycote website does not list 5 mm Softie (at least I can't see it). Got a picture or a link? And are you talking about replacing the BBG and Windjammer with a Softie alone instead or are you saying a Softie put on over the BBG?

Thanks

the picture is misleading as this softie is very short.
i use this with an AKG ck93
kelly a softie does not go over the BBG its an all in one windscreen

OK, thanks, I got it now. By the way, K-Tek now makes softies as well and I bought one for my Rode NTG-1 only because Samy's did not carry the Rycote. However, I actually prefer the K-Tek to the Rycote as the K-Tek does not have that heavy rubber collar on the end. It is also cost less.

K-Tek also makes a couple of different versions, some that just slip on and others that are an all in one shockmount with softie.
