laptop as field monitor

Does a laptop do a good job as a field monitor? Do you really nead a field monitor independant of the LCD that comes with the dvx? I understand that the contrast ratios might not be that evident without a field monitor, but I'm sure that this is nothing that can't be fixed with a little final cut tweeking. . . right?

Yes you need a field monitor. For several reasons.

The LCD does not show you the entire frame going to tape. In other words you really have no idea what is going to tape on the left and right edges if you don't have a field monitor with underscan capabilities.

If you are using squeeze mode then you really have no way of seeing what you shot really looks like since the LCD shows the image squeezed.

It is also very tough to focus using the LCD if not impossible.

There are many other reasons - color, contrast, etc. I am pretty new to but these are some of the things I've learned.

I would vote for a pro CRT monitor. Not as cool as an lcd, but many times better. I have worked with both, and after receiving my own CRT, I will never go back to a laptop.

That said, DV rack is a great tool of it's your style.
