mixing 24pa with 60i footage

quick question, I have footage shot on 24pa that i need to edit with 60i footage. What would be the best way to go about using both in one timeline? I am using FCP.

This isn't as easy as it may seem.

If you don't mind a strobing sort of jagged feel to the motion in your 24pa, then you can use it in your 60i timeline. But man, the difference between the two, especially when butted together, is gonna hurt.

A more complex way to do it would be to remove the 24pa pulldown, export a quicktime then use something line nattress, or After Effects or Cinema Tools to reintroduce a regular pulldown. I haven't tried this, but then you'll have footage that should look less jerky than the 24pa stuff. But again, butted up against the 60i stuff, you'll see a radical difference, calling more attention to each.

A third option is to use something like Natress Film Effects or Magic Bullet to try and make your 60i stuff 24p. I personally think that the footage will look too jerky, but some people like it. Then you could work on a 23.98 timeline.

Did you remove the pulldown?

If you just drop 24fps footage into a 29.97 timeline it will duplicate frames to add up to 30. Not ideal, but works. Just stick it in there and render.

However, if you really want to be smart about it you'd use Cinema Tools to add a 3.2 cadence to it... I think Shake will do it too, but CT might be a better workflow.

Or even dump it to tape with the 3.2 cadence added (inside your RT menu) then recapture as 29.97.

I haven't captured the footage yet so if someone can give me step by step details that would help me out alot. I do have cinema tools. I was planning on adding the slightest bit of strobe to the 60i footage to help make them look more similar but anything suggesed that will work better, i'm all for it.

With the DVX... you need propper planning. You can't just jump in and shoot willy-nilly. 30i 24p and 24pA are all different things for different uses. It would have been MUCH better if you had planned properly to get the right footage with the right settings.

Preacher mode off.

YOU are going to have to decide if you can live with the 2.3.3.2 cadence in your material. Who knows, you might like it. To me it looks like crap.

Capture the material just as 29.97 off any other tape. Drop it into the 29.97 timeline and see if you like it.

Does it work for you?

Yes -- good, press

No? Well then come back and we'll work it out.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't shoot this footage so there wasn't much I could do about how it turned out. I don't see this being a big problem, it's not a huge production. I'll try using 29.97 capture and timeline and see how it looks.

What if I used Cinema Tools to change the 60i footage to 24p? I won't be using the audio from the 60i camera, and just to mention the 24pa camera was a wide shot with little movement in the shots. The cameras don't have to have the exact same look, I just don't want a huge noticeable change between the two.

CT is NOT the greatest program to conform 60i to 24p. You need to use something like magic bullet in AE, Shake's optical flow, or the cheapest, Natress Standards Conversion.
