External car monitor

Hey everyone,

I have a Power Acoustik pt-74 car monitor that I had from a couple years ago. I figured I could hook it up to my DVX to use with a jib arm I recently built. The only connection on the TV is a 6-pin connector. So, I bought this http://www.svideo.com/leadtek6pin.html and hooked it up to my camera...and nothing happens. There isn't any kind of power chord for the monitor so I figured the DVX could use phantompower, but no luck.

Am I missing something here? Or is the DVX just unable to use a monitor like this?

thanks in advance,

-Logan

The reason why your idea didn't work is because the monitor uses a proprietary plug, not something you can just run out and pick up a simple RCA adaptor for. Plus, there's no phantom power over video. Oh, but how I wish there was.

Yeah, so, figure out the pinouts and make your own cable, or else, find some other way.

i cannot find a good description of the monitor in question...every page i found only said "video input" no description of that input just "input" so i don't know if it's composite or s-video - since you said 6-pin i'll go with you and presume s-video. in that case you are fine, but you need to power the monitor. it either has an adapter or a car (cigarette lighter) plug...which is it? actually either way you can cut the wire and use the positive and negative wires and connect to either a converter or straight to a small car battery.

If you look at the link I posted, that's the input it uses. And as far as power, I have no idea, the 6-pin cable goes under the floor of the car and attaches to the back of a DVD player. I can't really follow it. And, there are no other connections except for the 6 pin...

Thanks for helping out,

-Logan

did u take this monitor out yet? the power is either at teh monitor and wired into a light or something or it runs in the 6-pin. I used to install car video and audio systems. If you can post a pic i can prolly give ya a hand. A small 12v battery and a rca video cables should be all you'll really need. I've been plannin on using a car lcd screen for a steadicam setup for awhile... now i just need to get the steadicam.

Yes I have taken it out. The adaptor cord I got does have the yellow RCA cable on it as well. What would you like the picture of, the monitor right?

Thanks for the help.

i am using a car monitor...and mine has battery connections so i'm using a converter most of the time and then a small battery if needed.

I have had and wired up may Car TV's and I can tell you the on the end of the cable in your car not only are there RCA Jacks but there are also power cables, even if you can't see them they are there, any good installation center would hide that. If you take the entire cable out of your car you will see it, and that is what you will have to do to make this setup work. Some of those pins are for power and some are for video, the monitor is powered by the car's 12 volt system and that is something you will have to replicate in the field with a 12 volt battery pack or power inverter to use AC with it.
