Top 10 Films of 1983...

1983...

We lost silent screen star Gloria Swanson, who resurged in the uber-classic Sunset Blvd as the unforgettable Norma Desmond - Revenge of the Jedi was scrubbed as a title at the last possible hour - Jack Dempsey, one of the top 3 prize fighters of all time on the Callaghan list, left us for the celestial boxing ring

Please try to do a top 10 in order (hard as it may be) with an optional two or three "honorable mentions".

Interesting year. There were so many films I LOVED in 1984 but 1983 felt like a slow year.

My favorite from 1983 was:

I am 9 freaking years old. Playing with dirt, eating mangoes and looking through a window on the only TV in a 5 mile radius. No, i'm not Cambodian.

Lol nice list Cygnet, my goes something of the same sorts. Nostalghia, what a film, not to take away from other incredible films, however, Nostalghia hits the spot.

Scarface? I mean it's the shi* when you watch it but compare Scarface to a Kubrick film made 10 years prior and the movie isnt the shi* it's just shi*. Go Al Pacino you rocked that movie.

I think The King of Comedy is underrated, most non-movie people I meet have never seen The King of Comedy or After Hours for that matter, what great flicks tho.

Huh ?

I used him as an example of a not because there is a direct relation to Scarface. He always comes to mind first when I think of quality films, Lean is another example I'd use. What they, with many others, were doing years before Scarface was much more interesting, in my opinion. I think the commendable list of films mentioned by Cygnet are much more interesting and meaningful in a filmmaking and storytelling sense than Scarface. While I own Scarface because I am a fan, I dont think it is on the same level as other films and couldnt see fitting it into my 1983's top ten.
and I think Al Pacino was the best thing about Scarface.

Thank's for the detail.

I was 'this close' to putting Rumble FIsh in place of The Outsiders on my list; but went with my emotion in the end. Rumble FIsh easily could have taken the Oscar for Cinemtography as well.

I appreciate Monty Python but prefer A Fish Called Wanda (If this makes sense).

Besides The King of Comedy, I haven't seen the other films. But if you're comparing Scarface to anything Kubrick did, Ill take 'pre- Mission Impossible' De Palma anyday over anything Kubrick has done.

I can dig The Shining, love Full Metal Jacket but the rest is uninspiring for me. Maybe it's the era. I don't know. But I do know that films like Carrie, Dressed To Kill, Blow Out, Scarface, Body Double, The Untouchables (and damn it Ill throw in Casualties of War for sake of being one of the few good Vietnam films) anyday over Stanley's stuff.

Always IMO

Also, 'Sisters' and 'Obsession'.

DePalma would probably be my favorite director if I had to choose based on the number of films he's made that I've found to be very decent to very good. There's an occassional one here and there considered to be crap by most, but none of his films are completely without something well-executed.

And I'm sure some will disagree, but I checked out 'Femme Fatal' based on recommendation of a Hollywood Video employee...didn't expect much of it (Rebecca Romaijn Stamos as the lead) but was pleasantly surprised by it. It redeems itself during the last 10 minutes, making you forgive it for what you thought was a slap to your intelligence.

I agree with this assessment; even Sanke Eyes was much better than I ever thought it would be

There just seems to be 2 De Palma's. The creative one and the studio one (MI, Snake Eyes, Femme Fatale)

I'm hoping Black Dahlia brings us back.
