Is the AT4073a really better than the ME66?

I need to get a boom mike and these are the two in my price range (under $700). I've heard the AT4073a is better. Anyone can attest to this. The need for phantom power kind of bugs me but will be worth it if it gives better sound.

Here is a direct link to Matt's test: http://www.gettreel.com/me66 vs 4073a.wma

I just took a listen, haven't heard that test in awhile. I really hate that ME66 sound. How can a company that makes the 416 give us this POS.

Not trying to sway your opinion...surly some people listens to both and think the ME66 rocks. I don't even particularly care for the AT that much but that's just my opinion.

Rented the ME66 a few times. Liked it but thought it was really hot. Too bright for my ears. Bought the 4073a and it sounds amazing. More warm. It's like the ME sounded the too processed and the 4073a was clean and clear, but then again it could be that I just plopped down $700 for it and my ears wanted to hear $700 worth of goodness. :crybaby:

Let you ears be the judge.

Unless you get a good second hand 416 - that is still my number one first choice under 1k for a short shotgun.

Very true Tim. If a person has a month or two to get the mic finding a used 416 is pretty simple and will come in around $600 to $800.

On the other hand, some people in here have expressed concerns over novice boomers using of the 416. I see that point but a little practice can overcome that IMO.

I got my used 416 on eBay for $450 (plus another $50 to have Sennheiser check it out and make sure it's perfect).

As far as a mic to use with a novice boom op, the 4073a is a good choice. Its pickup pattern is wider than the 416, so there is a bit more flexibility. So I have both, and bring out the appropriate one depending on the boom op's skills. Once I go with one, I don't switch to the other one on the same project, though.

And, I still have my first shotgun, an AT897 which still sounds better than the ME66 to me (and gets a lot of use in really crappy locations where it is at risk - i.e. the herring processing plant we were in a few months ago.)

Well, I've actually been using my 416s and MK60s for three years at my college. I don't know if that stops me from being a novice but I'd rather get a 416 if I can find it used. Anywhere else with good prices aside from Ebay?

Most of the pro audio stores (Trew, Coffey, LS, Gotham, TAI, etc) have a consignment or used section. Ironically, the prices there are often better then ebay.

It might take a while to get a good deal but they are out there.

Cheers
