Sometimes the most simple of setups give the best results. I'm more impressed by the shot now that I've seen the setup.

Bullsh!t. Your work is fine. The lighting is decent and the composition is perfect. All you need is a little tweakage:

And here's how:

And for some fun, here's something I was playing with:

See what cool shapes you can build. Just turn layers on and off.

Cheeze, awsome work.

Simplicity is usually the best, and with your work, it shines as true in a wonderfull piece.

hey matt,

the corrected version above shows that it is a great pic. looks like a still from a movie for some reason. prob b/c of the look on his face. i definitely see some more jpeg artifact and now am convinced that the softness is due to that. good stuff. post some more.

Rapier, you kick ass at PS... yeah that shot looks good now. I didn't intend it to be anything special but now it is! Thanks.

Cheez... I have you to thank for my prop table in the kitchen... I think I want to do a Tim Burton movie... no wait... I mean maybe YOU should.

Yankee... thankee... you're always cool about things... all I'm saying is that I just got the cam and it's taking some getting used to. I am enjoying it however and it is comforting to know that it's possible to get decent shots as jpegs directly out of the cam... although I've been experimenting like a mofo on settings.

Here's my dad at 7pm this evening... 85 1.8.

And here's my dad going into hyperspace:

Great subject to shoot. I like the bokeh with that lens. Really nice results.

Now, I'm not trying to steal your thunder of finally posting something, but I just got done with these:

50mm 1.8. Snapped this in my kitchen with a nasty overhead flour. just blazing. You can see I didn't adjust the white balance, so I wanted to play with it a little in post. This is how SHARP that 50mm 1.8 is though.

EDIT:
Just look at the sharpness in that original image. This is with no planned lighting, it is just freaking sharp!

Yes that lens kicks major ass! You don't have to tell me man! I'm a BIG FAN of that 1.8 glass! Working with that kind of aperature is liberating... For the other lenses I'll have to remember to bring a monopod or tripod.

I didn't think I'd need to... but as I look at the 100+ images I shot tonight I realize that's what's needed to get some of those great shots. I think you can handhold anything 2.8 and faster in available (dim) light...

Here's another shot from my dad's backyard... you can see how the DOF is a major consideration... using the lowest F soley for the purpose of getting adequate light means the focal plane will make the shot look soft in all but the tiniest area. Notice the pole there... that's about it for focus.

Heres a panorama I took of the broklyn bridge and surroundings. I'm still playing with the grain/mixed shades in the sky in PS.

matt that dof on the 85 is out of control. i must have one. i know samy's sells the 50mm for around $100 but who's got the deal on an 85mm? pics look great by the way.

dad going into hyperspace......LOL!!

Is that this one?

I hope so. I think this is supposed to be a good one. I bought three of them new from the school when it closed (yes, this came out of the box for the pic and that's the plastic it was in behind it). I really need to inventory my equipment. I have loads of lights and some kind of bizarre flash units I dont even know what to do with.

bfischinger, that is a FANTASTIC piece that slam dunks anything I have every done.

You have GOT to let me play with the originals of that panoramic, or even the built high rez panoramic.

PLEASEEEE????

Rapier,

That is the exact lens I have, the 50mm 1.8 D. It is a $100-$120 lens and the sharpest piece of glass there is. Here are just a couple of portrait type shots I took in the office yesterday, no correction, no adjustments, just straight out of the camera and uploaded to snapfish (so they resized during the uploading).

D50, 50mm 1.8, Natural lighting through window

Nikon SB-600

Fairly cheap, and well regarded.

MattinSTL just ordered the SB-800 because it is like $100 and has 2/3 more power... I'm going to be in the market for one in like 2-3 months and I am thinking between the 600 or 800.
