How Notorious isn't on here, I don't understand. But, Rear Window.

If you're getting into Hitch, you should check out some of his silent pictures. Very early work he did in England, but it's really quite stunning how eary he started developing his aethetics.

Funny story about Lifeboat:

From IMDB: During filming, several of the crew members noted that actress Tallulah Bankhead was not wearing underwear. When advised of this situation, director Alfred Hitchcock observed, "I don't know if this is a matter for the costume department, makeup, or hairdressing."

SHADOW OF A DOUBT or STRANGERS ON A TRAIN. Really depends on which I've seen more recently. Also *love* PSYCHO.

The polling system will only allow 10 choices. It was really hard to try and pick 9 (and leave 1 for other). :(

Stupid polling system. But I do think Notorious is miles and miles above Psycho and the Birds. Those are like two of his weakest and junkiest movies I think.

Rope is fun for the performances and the gimmick. Jack and I were just talking about that last night. Also, Dial M for Murder is pretty good too, though they released it in 3D!!!! WTF?

I like Notorious a lot. I also left off "Rebbeca" which is his only "Best Picture" winner.

I can understand you're not liking "The Birds", but your hatred of "Psycho" is just plain crazy. :)

There are so many great ones that I love...

I am debating between Psycho, which is just brilliant, Rope, which is the greatest use of staging and directing, North by Northwest, which is just edge of your seat intensity, and Vertigo, which is the greatest mystery of his career.

I love Strangers on a Train, Rear Window, and 39 Steps, but I think that it comes down between the top four for my favorite. Rope might get the edge simply because it is shot all in ten minute reels, no cutting, so therefore it is literally the man and his camera. There is something remarkable about how this film makes you feel...

Then again Psycho is virtually flawless and North by Northwest has some great jokes not to mention the running on Mt. Rushmore and that whole crop duster wide spaces scene...

Screw it... Rope!

And about two dozen set hands to run the furniture around when no one's looking. :)

Yeah, I certainly don't think it's terrible, but for Hitch, it's on the low end in my book. I like how he plays with the structure, by switching up the hero three times, but at the base, I just don't think the writing and characters hold up to things like Rear Window, or Strangers on a Train. Granted, he didn't write his movies, but...really he kind of did.

Also, if you have never read it you MUST get Hitchcock/Truffaut, the interview with Hitch and Truffaut.

And, if you want to dig in, I just finished a book called "Psycho: a casebook" by Robert Kolker. A bunch of essays and examinations of the movie. It gets pretty arcane at points, because it's written by college types, but there is some good stuff in it as well.

If this is a list of "favorite" and not "best," where's "To Catch a Thief"? Cary Grant is always fantastic, and Grace Kelly at her yummiest . . .

Voted for N by NW. I think it's the most fun to watch. I love the rear projection when CG is driving drunk, and the score is killer.

I haven't seen Notorious -- I'll get on that.

Rope does have some great performances. Although Stewart is kind of miscast, he was still good. I just wish all the cuts were subtle, instead of the push in on guy's back, pull out from guy's back. I think it's hysterical how they had to move the furniture to accomodate the camera.
