If i shoot something at 1440 x 1080, are there burners out there and media that will allow me to make a hd dvd? Or do I even need a special burner? Can I just use my regular one with HD media? Maybe it depends on the software and if you can input the settings for that resoultion. I see that those BluRay discs hold a lot more info... but use a blue lazer instead of a red one. So I guess that means I would need a bluray burner or some other HD burner.

All I know is I can shoot HD stuff but once its edited, I can't do anything with it. It sjust on the computer. I can make a WMV HD file but thats about it. I'm just wondering if I should even shoot HD since its gonna be downconverted anyway. I know you will get better color sampling and stuff from starting out in HD but when I look at HD stuff exported at 720 x 480 it doesn't look any better than shooting SD in the first place. And just sticking with SD will allow much faster rendering times.

What should I do or any advice?

Plextor releases world's first BluRay burner: http://www.plextor.be/
Technically you can burn HD content to ordinary DVD but there's no stand-alone DVD player for playback such stream.
For now it's good to hold your HD footage on hard drive and wait until HD-burners come. Yes, it takes huge space, but downconverting HD to SD makes no sense.

There are some players that can play HD media (like the Avel LinkPlayer) but very few people have them. If you want to make something that can be widely distributed the only practical way to go is to burn a DVD that can be played on Windows Media Player.

woah i never thought of that. So, I guess I would need to find and use some HD codec that is available for WMP.

WM9 HDTV Microsoft’s high-definition delivery format is among numerous formats included in the Windows Media 9 (WM9) framework. By employing an aggressive compression scheme, WM9 HDTV permits high-definition video encoding and playback at relatively low data rates.

I"m using PPRO2.0 and I notice that I can't use the WM9 HDTV preset because the audio mix is 5.1 and it wont allow an upmixing. So is WM9 1080p the same as WM9 HDTV? does anyone know?

OOps well i think i just found out the answer to my own question. You can select 5.1 but then under Audio, you can change the format from 5.1 channel 24bit VBR to 2 channel 24bit VBR.

I will try that soon. And Barry when you say create a DVD that will play in WMP, does that mean a data DVD or an actual DVD that WMP will decode? I guess I can look on the website and see what I can find.

EDIT** Well looks like a DVD decoder is around 10 bucks. But I guess my only question is this: How do I make a DVD playable in WMP? like i asked before is it a data disc that you open up and click the file to play? or can i actually make a full DVD with menus? I supposed I would need new media as well, since the standard dvd is 4.7gigs.. imjust not sure where to go to find all this out. what burner, which media, etc... or should I just be the test dummy....

Well I guess I can't burn full DVDs it would have to be a data disc... I can't import any video into Encore 2.0 other than 720x480, 720x486, and 704x480.

WMP can't play DVD-s but several others can...Mediaplayer Classic, VLC Player.
You can encode your video to AVC codec (with Nero I guess) and yes, it would be just one file for making data disc, no menus/chapters. And playback with computer...2,4+GHz would be powerful enough for HD stream.
For chapters and menus you need authorizing program, which is capable for making HD-DVD or BluRay disc. For professionals I know Sonic Scenarist http://www.sonic.com/products/Professional/Scenarist/quicklook.aspx
There are many others I think.

You might also consider using the Xvid codec -- open-source (ie no licensing fees for distribution), and more importantly, it's cross-platform.

I'll sugguest xvid in the mp4 container with AAC audio, Quicktime natively supports this, HD-DVD will be able to support this assuming you can demeux the streams, and (hopefully) Windows Media player will support this soon enough.

This is frustrating... Because I'd love to output HD to something... But I can't... Stinks..... HD just isn't there yet.... And is anyone else pissed that they'll have to replace all their DVD's if they want them in HD?
