marshall monitor out question

I noticed yesterday I couldn't get a signal out of the marshall monitor via video out while coming in from the camera via component. Perhaps it's an obvious limitation, but should that be the case? Are the 'out's' only good with the corresponding 'in's?

I spoke with Rob at Nebtek and he confirms this is the case. You've got to send the same signal out as you have coming in, which is pretty standard and not just limited to the Marshall.

Hi Guys... Rob at NEBTEK here,

The sad fact of the matter is that Composite, S-Video or Component inputs will only translate to their exact equivalent on the output. If an onboard camera monitor were to have an HD up-converter (or down-converter) the size of the unit would double in size. The conversion process (on either end) is a tricky process that dedicated upconverters (such as Transvideo's) still have not perfected.

The bottom line is that the technology exists, but at this time it is extremely costly, unperfected and bulky.

Looking at it that way makes total sense. Thanks Rob. While we have your ear, could you tell me if you're able to sell a Nebtek battery mount for the Marshall and HVX battery on its own - I only need the adapter as I already have the Marshall. Couldn't find this part alone on your site. Also I'm in the UK. Thanks,

yes, this proved to be a problem for as well.

however, on some cameras you can hookup multiple lines, like coponent out ans also an s-video out. that way one will go to the Marshall for the camera op and one to the larger monitor for the director and others.

granted, that makes for bulkier setup and more wires to get in the way of things, but at least people get to see what's going on.

personally, I think the s-video and video out lines are decent enough with standards monitors and don't spending a ton of money on high end monitors as long the op has a good one like the marshall to work off of.

Hi Mark,
I can sell you the battery adapter and parts to make the conversion, but unless your tech savy (and extremely handy with a soldering gun) you risk irreparably damaging your monitor.

When we do the conversion it voids your warranty with Marshall, but we pick up where the Marshall warranty leaves off. We basically assume the risk of damaging the unit and any technical problems it may cause. I have had a Sony LIBC on my Marshall working with my Z1U for about 19 months and I have never had a problem with it.

Thanks Rob. In the end I have gone with an all in one rear rod mounted battery which can power the HVX200, the Marshall and the Firestore.

Many thanks

Sounds like a sweet setup Mark...
How do you have the weight balanced on the unit?
Got any pictures you could share?

-Rob

Weight balance is certainly an issue, in fact the whole setup runs 10KG :(, but this is only ever intended for being used on a tripod or dolly. Its basically the Zacuto system below, but has the M2 and Chrosziel MB.

Its very bulky with wires everywhere, but I'm slowly starting to tweak that. I have order right angle FW cables for the Firestore and right angle BNC for the Marshall so the wires hug the bodies rather than stick out. I need a short component cable ideally also.

However the Zacuto bits are very high quality, sturdy and relatively quick to setup.

This setup is for a feature later in the year which is suited to this amount of kit. For another project only the front support will be used with the mattebox and we'll probably try and use P2 cards instead of the FS100, the Marshall won't be used then either.

EXCELLENT Mark,
Your rig is definitely a feature ready setup.

I know the guys at Zacuto extremely well. Jens has been buying equipment from me for years. It looks like I'm going to have to return the favor.

By the way... I'm starting to sell a lot of our Lithium-ion battery adapters as power solutions for the Firestore as well.

Hi Rob,
They have been great to me too and have been very responsive and quick with the order. Interesting and very cool that you can also do the power adapter for the Firestore - I'm guessing this uses the bottom power port rather than replacing the attached battery.
