24p in Adobe Premiere 2.0

hey everybody, i'm a new dvx user, and new user to the site...

anyway, i am somewhat confused about how adobe premiere handles 24 frame per second video. i shot a few minutes of test footage the other day in 24pa mode, imported it into a 24fps project and it seemed to work fine. for my own piece of mind though, i need to understand how premeire deals with 24p.

what i've found on this site is that if you shoot 24p, then youre supposed to edit in a 30fps timeline and if you shoot 24pa, you edit in the 24fps timeline. however, premiere has one 24fps project setting that seems to support both 24p and 24pa. Does premiere somehow know which mode you shot on? how does it know which pulldown to use in order to get the 24 frames per second.

basically, the talk about 24p thus far seems to be mostly in reference to fcp. if someone knows about 24p/pa specifically in premiere pro 2.0 - your wisdom would be aprpeciated.

I also have similar questions, so I hope we get some reponses from the group. Just to tag along this thread, what about shooting 30p with Premiere? I was told you can edit it on a 60i timeline, but I'd like to confirm and understand what the proper workflow is for progressive frame modes.

Im no expert. But I have had similar problems with Premiere. i noticed that when choosing the 24p preset it automatically sets it into 2:3:3:2 which is the flagging system set for 24pa so if you manually change it to 2:3:2:3 It seems to work for me in premiere. The pulldowns are what we were taught in a film making class I had last quarter 24pa (2:3:3:2) can be converted to film with true 24 frames where as 24p(2:3:2:3) cannot.

But if anyone see's any error in what I say please correct me now before I continue to use this. Thanks and I hoped I helped.

both pulldows can be converted to true 24p, but the non advanced 2:3:2:3 wil undergo a recompression to do so. only the 2:3:3:2 can do it without recompression.. which is why its better. you dont want to lose a generation just to edit in the naitive frame rate.

but yes it works with BOTH types of pulldowns. you just need to be sure that you are selecting the proper one in accordance with the cadance used while shooting.. normal or advanced. or in the case of using an HVX in 720p 24PN mode, you dont apply any pulldown at all since its recording and writing a 24p file. in that case you would just make a 720p 24p custom project, and theres no need to worry about pulldown, just load the footage.

ourse Neil Rowe is correct. When you are editing in a 24p project in premiere it will work with both advanced and 24p normal however the normal will undergo a recompression and therefor a genereation loss. If you want to you can edit the 24p normal footage in a 60i timeline without the generation loss by importing it and then going ito the interpret footage section and make sure that "remove 24p pulldown" is not checked

Please....one more time here.........I feel so dumb haha

I want to shoot 24fps....project will be delivered on DVD.
Whats best.....24p or 24pa.
Using premiere...which preset for 24p, which preset for 24pa

Hopefully this is all explained in the PP2.0 manual. I havent installed the program yet. Waiting for duo core computer to arrive.

24p you use the regular ntcs 29.97 timeline and with 24pa you use the 24p preset.
