Not sure if will be visable or not (some owners of that mic post here and will probably chime in) but your sound will be poor if you mount the mic on the camera, unless you have your camera planted about feet directly in front of the speaker.
If you can't/won't boom, consider the wireless route. Any mic you use has to be really close to get anything decent.
Thanks for the response Wabbit. I've read lots of your posts so I respect your opinion.
This will be for documentary interviews and I will be using a wireless lav for them, or booming. However I'm sure there will be occasions where I need to source sound from the camera, and I want to make sure I can get the best sound [ie not using the on camera mic].
So I was going to mount a shotgun on the camera as a secondary audio source, and for those times, say when i'm in a car talking to someone, where a sound person isn't around.
So in researching the best mic for my budget, I quickly moved away from the ME66 to this setup as it also offers the two cap option depending on whether I am shootig indoors or out.
i can honestly say that the CK93 performs well mounted on the cam. i use one all the time indoors and out (with a softie). i would go for this cap first before the shotgun as its more useful. ive boomed it outdoors at close distances also. im not a pro but it works well for me.
I sometimes use the shotgun with a Mini-Rover attachment that keeps it out of the frame unless you're using a wide-angle lens. The ck93 works great as well.
Matt- when you mount the ck93 do you use BBG + Windjammer?
Your answers have made me re-think my original strategy. If my need is for a camera mounted mic which gives me the best options for indoor and outdoor, do you think the AKG w C93 cap is the way forward? Other mics I have considered are:
Audio Technica AT4073
The Rode NTG1 [i think the NTG2 would appear in wide shots]
Oktava MK012
Remember, I will be using wireless or boom if I need, this is just so I have a good mic on camera for when I need it, indoors and out.
