Can you render in two formats in Vegas 5?

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to render two different formats, on the same timeline, in the same render process? I have a feature film I'm rendering, all of it except for one scene, shot on 24P, and one scene in the middle of the film, is shot on regular NTSC DV video. If I try rendering the whole project as 24P, the regular DV scene comes out fuzzy. I could render the scene seperately but I'd rather keep it all as one single rendered project. Can that be done?

Thank you. Ruben

No. You can't render a single file in two different formats.

If you want to keep the 60i aesthetic for that clip, then render the whole thing as 60i.

Thank you for your response, David.

The thing is, I have to keep the rest of the film at 24P. Only the one scene in the middle can be 60i. I'm going to be burning the disk on Sony DVD Architect. Do you know if one can bring in the two different formats into DVDA and paste them together there for burning...and how exactly would I do that?

No, you can't.

If you render as 60i, the 24p footage will retain its 24p aesthetic.

But you will not be able to render as 24p and not convert the 60i to 24p, and thus (as you've seen) lower its resolution.

Hi David,

So, just to be sure I get it, you're saying I can render the whole project as 60i and the scenes with the 24P quality/resolution will not be affected at all and will remain the same image as if I had rendered it as 24P?

Ruben

You should not notice a difference in the 24p.

The only thing I'd say is that if you shot 24pA, you *might* notice a slight motion stutter in shots with a lot of motion -- but only *might*, and no more than if you were playing it off the tape.

But if you shot 24p standard, you've got no worries.

David,

I did shoot 24p Anamorphic, and I do have some shots with a lot of motion, so I'm concerned there might be some stutter. Is there any other way around this? Any other method I can use, either in Vegas, or DVD Architect, with which I can maintain the full 24pA quality of the film and yet be able to keep the one scene in 60i?

Thank you again for your help,

Ruby

Did you shoot 24p Advanced (24pA), or 24p "anamorphic" (squeeze, or with the anamorphic adaptor)? If "anamorphic," it won't make a difference; it has nothing to do with motion cadence.

If there's a motion stutter, it will be very slight. Render a section and see if it's unacceptable.

You CAN convert 24pA footage to 24p footage by bringing it into a 24p timeline, then rendering it out again as an AVI -- 24p DV with 2-3 pulldown.

In this instance, render your project as 24p with 2-3 pulldown. Then, bring it into a 60i timeline, cut out the spots which had the 60i footage, and then replace those spots with fresh 60i files. Then, render again as NTSC DV.

But before you do that, check the properties of your 24p clips. If it says it's removing 2-3 pulldown and not 2-3-3-2 pulldown, you're fine.

That's advanced.

Like I said, render a segment and see if you're OK with how it looks. Otherwise, follow the steps I outlined above for conversion.
