Sen HD280pro phones versus Sony MDR7506

ps - kelly, i dont think matt meant to be rude at all. he's a well respected member of this forum and often offers great insight. but on the flip side, thank YOU for being a considerate user that looks out for newer folks.. in this industry, its good that we can watch each others backs. :)

Not sure if they make these to fit the 7506 etc. but I have a set of cloth covers on my aviation headset that makes them more comfortable in a hot environment, i.e. the phones don't stick to you. Usually available at the pilot shop at an airport.

I appreciate your faith in my position Kelly, timapter, and others. I am guessing that MatthewD must have had some pretty negative experiences to make such a statement as he did to a new forum member. I'm sure there is reason behind his post.

That said, I do this for a living and I take pride in helping people. There is arguably no harm in offering members a viable option to make their purchase. I would hope that a simple presentation of that option coupled with what I hope to be useful and helpful information would give someone a comfort level to do business with Full Compass.

If I were to post something like "I sell these for $89.99. Buy them from me" and leave it that, then I would say you have reason to "light the torches." In the meantime, I would appreciate a little common courtesy.

I am here because other forum members have made purchases from me and asked me to join due the help they received from me.

As long as you're posting the gear I want at a good savings and you represent a reliable source for that gear... FC is a good company... then I think you're doing the members a service. If it became spammy then I'm sure somebody would let you know about it... offering knowledge and buying options tastefully is something that this forum has never had a problem with, and I hope it never does.

I've got the 7506's for their total compatibility with my gear package... and because I find them in other shooter kits all the time, so I'm familiar with the sound... as has been said. When I run sound on someone else's set and with all their gear it's good to see the 7506's... sure it would be no big deal to plug in my own phones, but sometimes I forget to bring my own when they tell me I don't need to bring any of my own gear. So anyway... the 7506 is kind of a standard in the industry... I wouldn't say it's totally flat though... I think they have a slight midrange boost which is helpful in hearing the quality of the dialog more then anything else. Aside from that I even enjoy listening to music through mine... I've got 3 pr. of 7506 (one not working at the moment)...

Also of note is that the 7506 impedence and response is very happy with the original (and probably B model) DVX... in the A model panny did something odd with the headphone amp... so I'm not as impressed with the combo on that cam, but in my original DVX the 7506 is perfect (for those times when you need to monitor from the cam... or somebody else does).

The other side of the coin is that I could use more isolation... on noisy shoots where my job is the dialog, but there are room reflections and other sound that ISN'T wanted in the track... I find myself pushing down on the headphones to try and discern whether I'm hearing the echoes through the headphones or through the mic... sometimes it's really hard to tell because the 7506s could isolate better. They're good... and probably good enough... but not great.

I've been tempted to get some of the remote audio phones where they put 7506s inside of a pilot headset... but I used to fly and I can tell you that pilot headsets SUCK in the comfort department.

The really good headsets, that were comfortable... had noise cancelling technology... but with flying it's a lot easier to have effective NC because the sounds you want to cancel are constant droning patterns... so the NC is actually quite effective... and I should add that the good NC sets STARTED at about $500+

So there you go... my .02 says the 7506 if you don't need maxium isolation... I also like how they fold down to a tiny ball.

If you want to prioritize isolation then you should consider something else. I like the 7506s enough to buy 2 sets (3rd pair wasn't mine, but I have them)... but I wouldn't mind the luxury of more isolation and more comfort.

I've had the 280's for well over two years now and I love them. Very well isolated, great responce and extremely comfortable, especially for long periods of time. They also fold up to about half their size.

My one and only grievance with them is that the outer head-band has completely disintegrated on either side of the top padding. It started out as small cracks, obviously from the plastic being stretched when they were taken on and off. These cracks got bigger and bigger, and eventually bits of the plastic started falling off. Now the wire and metal band is exposed, but they still work perfectally, and the strap can still be adjusted. I thought maybe I just got a bad batch, but my friend has a pair, and his are now starting to show the small cracks mine did.

I'm about to get a set of 7506's, so I have a set I can use in the field, while just using my 280's for studio work, foley e.t.c...

I'll most likely buy another set of 280's even if I love the 7506's, it'll be good to have the option of either for different situations.

I have both the 280s and 7506s. On the 280s I would agree with the comments about isolation and flat response but I guess I must be a real fathead (just ask my wife :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) ) as they are like a vise grip on my head. Not really that comfortable for me. I've also had the problem with the headband stress cracking. I've epoxied and taped the band back together and they look ugly but I still use them with I need the isolation.

The 7506s, on the other hand, I can wear for hours at a time. They seem a bit bright to my ears but I don't mind that for field use. In most situations I also don't mind the fact that they don't have the highest isolation. Maybe I've just gotten used to 'em but I kinda like being aware if something is going on behind me. With the 280s I've had a loud phone go off right next to me and it sounded like it was off in another room. As for the exposed wires on the 7506s, I don't find them a problem in use. I store the set in the soft vinyl case that came with them so the wires aren't a problem there either.

For pleasure I use neither. For that I prefer a pair of freebie AKG K240s that have a nice low-end boost and are very comfortable on my big noggin. I don't think there's one set of cans that can do it all.
