Light Kits - Which to choose - Please advise

Hello all!

A new user to the boards, and looking to tap the wisdom of those brilliant souls around me.

I have experience lighting indoors and so on, but will soon be taking a shoot out into the world. I have been renting a Arri light kit of 2 300's/2 650's for all of my indoor shots, but could also make much better use out of the Arrisun and Chimeras, (which I have yet to use).

So to finish my ramblings, I am looking for advice on which light kit to acquire.

My budget range is $1000-$2000, and will require lights for outdoor shots, as well as indoor. I usually aim to use a 3-light set-up for indoor shots, and know that for outdoors, without amazingly high wattage lights, my options are severely limited.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I been using a Lowel kit for years. 1 Tota light, 1 Omni light, 1 Pro-light. I ususally have a variety of bulbs - from 250w to 1000w. That and blue gels and I'm good inside or out.

Based on your price range, you might want to consider the Lowel DVcreator 55 kit. It's around $1750 CDN and includes everything I mentioned above plus a Rifa softbox. If you've used a softbox before, you know how awsome it is for interviews.

B&H has them: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=285930&is=REG&addedTroughType=categoryNavigation

Hope this link works. I new here so I've never added a link before.

Good luck in your search

Hi Travis.

Like SilverWolf said, is it outdoor night, or outdoor day? if it's night then the fixtures you already have been using, along with some grip stuff will do fine. Particularly if you are running off house power. If it's outdoor day, forget about buying in the $1000 - $2000 range, you'd be better of renting if you need some serious light. Depending on the time of day you can sometimes get by with some reflectors and a bit of portable fill.

Thanks.
