That's a pretty cool shooting opportunity... I'm wondering what's up with that little tripod and cam that billy's playing to? I'm kinda' shocked if that's the film crew... it's all good, but I would have expected a little higher level of kit for this job.

cheezweezl,

Those are awesome. I can't believe that Slash looks almost identical to the way he did 20+ years ago... Nice shots!

Jeremy,

Phenomenal job in PhotoShop. Rapier has indeed taught you some amazing skills. I love what you did with those leaves and that brick. Great stuff.

I am so horrible at PhotoShop. I wish I could learn but it all feels so confusing to me. :(

You know what? Jeez man I didn't even think about that... what the hell man... he made a deal with the devil... how is it possible that he is UNCHANGED from 20 years ago? WTF?

Also forgot to say, diggin' the purple brick shot... yes burn 'n dodge baby... you about got that nailed down perfectly.

Oh and today's the day... it's ordering day... and I'm still slightly torn... I hate the anticipation of what I'm going to do when I don't even know what I'm going to do.

I just started playing and then Rapier kept answering questions and sending me PDF files that I learned a ton from. I think it is the subtle things that happen, but ultimately the one big thing that he taught me was to try to visualize how I want it to look before I start working on it. Thank you for the compliments though... The brick... I still don't know if I like how it looks, but I thought it was interesting enough to share.

That's what I'm talking about... Slash of 2006 looks the same as Slash of 1986! C'mon, who doesn't get a chill when they hear any song off Appetite for Destruction and that blazing Les Paul he played? (now I'm feeling old).

I actually didn't dodge and burn the brick image at all. If you look at the prison shot that Rapier posted he added all this funk to the image. I tried to take that idea and then I made a new layer and took a 300px paint brush set to 'multiply' and went over all the highlights in the water. That took like 20 seconds and then I set the layer to something... I can't remember, and from that point I adjusted the opacity and applied a little gaussian blur and I was able to dillute that blow out without it looking too obvious.

I'm quickly learning that I'm not very good at dodging and burning, but I like the way it looks in certain images.

Why are you on the fence? Congrats on finally getting around to ordering the camera though. I can't wait to see what you post... how about just a nice reverse birds eye of that arch that your city is always bragging about?

Is it just me or is landscape photography really hard to get an image that is satisfying from?

I'm surprised. Based on the way you have been writing, it sounds like the D50 was the easy choice.

I think he is just determined to take an easy decision and make it as complicated as possible :)

yeah, they shot it with 3 sony z1's. i watched the monitor a lot and i'm certain the hvx would have smoked them. even the dvx would have looked sweeter although lower rez. the fake 24p on the sony doesn't do it like the real 24p of the panny. the cheezy tripod side stage was camera b or c. there was also a guy running around with a fig rig and the main cam that was on the jib/dolly all day. i didn't direct or dp this thing. i was merely in charge of lighting and support gear (most of which was mine).

yeah, i can't explain that either. the dude loves to party and smokes constantly. but i spent a good hour 2 feet from him in a well lit room and the guy looks great. but i was most impressed with billy. that guy is in his 50's and in better shape than anybody that was on set. i don't think he drinks. he seemed to be sober all day...

I am a complete anti star fcuker, but I would have been autograph hungry if I was there...

Pick up a D70s... if you haven't yet then you probably shouldn't... they feel really good and solid. You don't cup your hand or curl your pinky under one side... you just hold the damn thing to your face and it's stable as a table.

Problem is... the d50 is too good. Go to Steve's Digicams and take a look at the sample pics of d50 and then d70s... they are both taken with the freakin' KIT lenses and the d50 is making better images... read the spines of the magazine jackets on the shelf... then look at the tops of the magazines and the noise in the d50 versus the noise in the d70s. If that picture were the only deciding factor then it would be a total no-brainer... there is no comparison between the two on noise.

The problem is all the cool pro-features that the d70s does... it does a lot of things that come natural to a person with an slr background...

In the end though Jeremy called it... he knows me.

Check this out.... since Steve's Digicams says copywrite I'll give links rather then copy pics and crop 'em... but if you want to see something to make you feel good about your d50 then get all these up so you can quickly go through them.

D50 ISO 200 w/ the 18-55 kit lens

D70s ISO 200 w/ the 18-70 GOOD KIT lens

Scroll around the magazines... and then the orangutan's fur... and then wherever else you want... but for this let's just focus on those details... individual hairs on the monkey and the magazine lettering as well as the look of the pages crushed together at the top.

Okay NOW let's see these in 1600 ISO! (If you're not already convinced, which you should be...)

D50 ISO 1600 w/ the 18-55 kit lens

D70s ISO 1600 w/ the 18-70 GOOD KIT lens

So there you go... I feel that I absolutely HAD to go d50... and yes, before anybody says it... I see that "steve" doesn't have identical lighting between the shots... but I think it's close enough to confirm what so many people have been saying in reviews of the d50... and it's even worse when you compare these pics knowing that the lenses aren't even close in quality... had steve used the same glass on both I think it would have been a visual slaughter.

Also let me add that I've seen some of the most stunning photography in my entire life on the net lately... much of it done with the d70... so that cam is no slouch, that's for sure... if you know me from the audio forums then you know that before I make a decision I flip into "splitting hairs mode"... yes I need prozac... but those suggestions usually comes from whoever's side I didn't end up on.

I think that's an incredibly important inconsisancy, and pretty much takes the comparisons and throws them out the window. the noise issue is much more prenounced with less light, exactly what he is doing, and I can only assume exactly for that reason.

The D70s pics are not as warm, and don't look as nice, because of the selective lighting. Get me a D50, I'll take my D70, put better light on the D70, and a gaurantee the results will be exactly the opposite.

If this guy knows anything about photography, and I am sure he does, why would he do the single worst thing he could to alter the D70's pics? How can that possibly be viewed by anyone as a real comparison? Hell, I'll take my GL2 or even my GL1, give it great lighting and then use my DVX in poor lighting and establish the DVX to be inferior.

Those results are completely bunk. I have seen comparisons between the D50 and the D70 and the D70s. The results are very similar, with the D50 sometimes giving better color representation, and then only to a small degree, and again, only in certain situations.

They are all good cameras and and the D50 and D70 share quite a few guts. But, this "test" was clearly biased.

That said, they still kick as$ for the price, and I still like them better than the Rebel.

EDIT: Oh, and thanks to you and Yankee I finally got the Octvia with the hyper cap, sabra som shockmount, windscreen and hot shoe adapter. Although I still wish someone would put the "everything I know about audio" thread into a .pdf

EDIT EDIT: That sounded a little confrontational, more than I meant it to, I'm too lazy to rewrite it, so here is the disclaimer (so to speak)

EDIT EDIT EDIT: I apologize about the multiple Edits, those responsible have been sacked.

Dude... the truth of the matter is that Yankee was the only guy talking me into the d50... I really wanted somebody to talk me into the d70s... where the hell were you? :)

For a PS master like yourself I think you could take pictures with anything and get gold... check out www.j3r.com

That's all d70... and it's some of the absolute most stunning photography I have ever seen in my entire life. I actually considered ordering prints from that guy... then after that go to www.pbase.com and check out Christopher Hart's "the girls" all shot with d70... again... incredible stuff coming from a guy that says he knew nothing about cameras before getting the d70... so yeah... this little adventure really wore on my pea-brain.

As an experienced SLR shooter... like I said... I really wanted to be talked into the d70s... just for the TTL off-cam flash, etc.

But NoooOOO, YOU guys left me alone in the room with Jeremy and NOW look... d50 on the way.

Well, Congratulations on finally making up your mind. I waffled between the D50 and D70 for about 3 days and ended up with the D50. Nice to know that after all your extensive research you still ended up in the same place. It makes me feel like I made a good choice.

Now, I can't wait to see some awesome pictures from you.

Chris
