Bootcamps coming back to LA

I went to the Bootcamp in Las Vegas where Noah Kadner showed us how to shoot directly to a hard drive with FCP. For me it was worth the price of the camp as I shoot exclusively in a studio. Thanks Noah!

I finally got my set up to work. I'm using a MacBook Pro 2Ghz, 1 Gig of Ram and an 7200 internal drive. I added a Siig Firewire 2 Port Express Card. I'm running the HVX200 into the Siig card and Maxtor drives out of the built in Firewire port. I'm using FCP 5.1. I tried using 5.0 but there were major problems...don't waste your time. If you have a MacBook Pro get 5.1.

I've run quite a few tests without any dropped frames using 720P in 24, 30 and 60 frames.

No doubt shooting directly to the drives will save HOURS of time I used to spend batch processing tape.

I can't wait to implement everything else I learned at the Bootcamp. The training was worth every dime...if you have an opportunity to attend don't miss it.

"$289 as usual, and includes the hvx book."
"If the book is printed before bootcamp im sure if you ask barry nice enough he can preship them to you when hes shipping out the ones for the NY attendees." (Jarred)

Barry, i've signed up for the LA HVX BOOTCAMP. I was wondering since I, like many other HVX owners, have been waiting to bye your HVX Book the second it becomes available, which it now seems will be before July 29th, if I can (pretty please:) recieve my copy of the book as a prepaid registrant of the class, which includes the HVX BOOK, when it comes out, and not have to wait for the 29th of July to recieve it. My shipping address was included with my PayPal registration.

I just registered. How long before location and times are determined ? I need to arrange travel plans etc..

I'm looking forward to it !

Hey Jarred, is there anyway to get more information on bootcamp, future bootcamps and gear that should be brought.... and of course, the question that I fear to ask, how much should you already know about, uhhh, anything regarding "anything" to be a part of a bootcamp. i wasnt sure if a noobers like me should even be asking such a question (I just learned about whitebalancing, thats how raw i am), but im getting my HVX next month and i live close to NYC, I recently bought Barry's DVX book and if the bootcamp is half as brilliant as this book was I'd like to attend one in the future.

you can read through the posts for more info.. you dont need to bring anything, but a HVX is a good thing to have so you can sit and go through the menus with us.. but we show it on a projector so its not totally necessary.

Skill range is from the beginning to the advanced user.. remember the cameras only been out for 6 months so we are all kinda new.

thanks Jarred, for the info and patience... i wanted to take my wife to las vegas in july, but if I do that now I'm sure i'll be telling her in the middle of a gambling run something like, "gotta go to the bathroom, be right back." and take a shuttle to L.A. for the bootcamp. Too much of a temptation, I'll wait for nyc since I dont want a divorce (just yet).

Well, Jarred, you’ve got another recruit for your July 29th Boot Camp. But I’m sorry to say that you have a monumental task ahead of you. I am the newbie of newbies. If this were the military, my rank would be E-nothin’. I have never used a handycam or videocam or whatever they are called before. And furthermore, for what it’s worth, I barely know that the glassy part of the camera points forward.

I put a lowball bid on an HVX on ebay and, of course, it was below the seller’s reserve price. It turns out that no one bid on the camera so the seller contacted me and let me have the camera for a really low price. It seems that the camera was purchased from B&H and then the gentleman changed his mind about what he wanted to do, so he never used the camera. The box was opened to make sure the camera was OK and to fill out the warranty card, but that’s all. I sure hope Panasonic will allow the warranty to be transferred. The camera hasn’t recorded a minute of film, or tape, or P2 or whatever it is that these cameras record on.

Anyway, now I am a very proud and stunned HVX owner and am hoping that you can give me some clue how to make magic with this seemingly awesome device.

Since the gentleman who had the camera for sale lived only about five blocks from the Abel Cine Tech store where the Boot Camp is to be held, we, my wife and I, stopped by to see where it was and to see if they could recommend a tripod.

We met a very nice (and very patient) gentleman by the name of Ron Ayers who gave us some very good ideas as to what tripods might work best for us (did you know you can mix heads and legs…cool huh?). Also, he took time to show us and explain some super cool accessories that we really really want (and really can’t afford) like the CamTram (is that cool or what!!) and the 1x1 lite panels (literally cool!). We ended up leaving with a clear filter to protect the lens and a hard case to protect the rest of our investment. Good advice I think. Jarred, I hope you don’t mind but I just wanted to get a plug in for Ron. We were very impressed with the time he spent with us and his great patience in showing us many of the basic sorts of things that everyone on this forum already probably knows anyway.

Finally, Jarred, do you have any suggestions for an inexpensive (or downright cheap) motel in Burbank for the night of the 29th. Didn’t know if you had anything worked out for a Boot Camp discount anywhere. Please let me know if you can. Thanks much!

Again, I’m sorry to be coming in with so little knowledge about this camera.

Charles- no worries you will get plenty out of the bootcamp. I'd recommend Pricelining it- there's a Hilton Hotel by the Burbank Airport you can normally grab for $70 that is safe and clean.

Hey Jarred, is there a discount for returning bootcampers. I missed the first LA one so I drove down to vegas to attend that one. Now that there's another one in LA, I feel like attending a refresher.

we cant offer discounts cause we have a limited seating cap.. sorry dude... but the LA one is gonna be alot better than the Vegas one... we are including a huge sound part to the class.

How much did you get it for?
