MovieTube on an HVX

I'm hiring my HVX out next week for a small ad shoot and it seems they'll be sticking it on a MovieTube with prime Nikons attatched.

Anybody got any experience with one of these setups? I'm curious as it looks about at being a step up from an M2 in pricing and design, but is the difference noticable? Would an M2 be just as attractive to them in the future, or is there really a step up in class to a MovieTube?

I'm tempted to ask to tag along to see my HVX in action rigged up like this.

Ironically, despite the massive price differential, I've found the M2's image to be superior -- no static grain pattern, and lower light requirements.

Furthermore, the M2 makes for a lighter, ergonomically superior package.

The only disadvantage of the M2 is that the image must be flipped in post rather than in the adaptor.

I love it when I hear this sort of comment - I have an M2 on the way, should be with me within a month.

I looked at their website last night and was surprised how lame it is. They have video shot with the MovieTube (thanks!), but not much information about the MovieTube itself.

Today I went to Cinegear, and was surprised to see a MovieTube inone of the booths, no less one with a HVX200 sitting on top of it (HVX200s were everywhere). The MovieTube is a serious piece of engineering, but I have no first-hand experience and am not qualified to judge it or compare it to other 35mm adapters.

Thanks. I agree it looks a beast.
It gets interesting when you see their upgrade to a MovieTube ST with a full shoulder mount w/ battery rack, and 2 grip holders at the front ala the DVRig.

This looks a very flexible, compact and rigid and way to have a portable 35mm lens system. It looks very well engineered.
Doesn't the M2 get a bit long and spindly on a shoulder mount?

I agree their website needs some work, though I do like the line-art drawings for the type of product it is.

How'd you like to lug that around?

Regarding the optical advantage of the M2 over the MovieTube, I'm really excited about Cinevate's Brevis35, it has the potential to spank the M2.

I don't want to be negative when commenting on the M2 (as its a great bit of gear for the price) but all the footage I've seen on their web site shows very soft edges. Now can someone tell me that its just been set up incorrectly or is this the payoff when it comes down to the cost of the unit.

Yes, it's cheap and YES I probably would have bought one but if the edge to edge softness is an issue, then I'll pass.

As for the Movietube, I've tested it on my DVX with my Arri Varaible Zooms but could not give any conclusive results as the PL mount that came with the movietube was manufactured wrongly. I believe they have since rectified this issue and will be laising with Cary at South London Filters to arrange a demonstration using my HVX, Movietube and my Varaible Primes.

Watch this space.

As for the M2 "soft edges' - Make sure that the footage you are viewing is newer. They hstill have footage and links posted from many many months back. They have improved both the ground glass and the achromat (hope I spelled it right). When I upgrade to the HD achromat the difference was quite impressive. No more soft edges at all.

what are all those lenses called on that last picture... are they for the HVX200?

no noo, that m2 setup looks longer because it's not the hvx.... notice the lens before the M2 is very long, the HVX's setup wouldnt be that long. The photo is there to be funny... and yes it would suck to carry that. Should put 2 shoulder pads on that and have two people shoot it. haha

Yes, that was a JVC of some sort if I recall correctly. I'm not sure what model though.

An image of The Three Stooges handling a ladder comes to mind when I think of someone carrying that beast...

lol, thanks guys. Can anyone recognize the models or name of those two lens used in the last picture? it is a beast yeah but I need a lens like those.

Alright, just for you, here is a different view of the lens behind the M2, as well as the wussy HDV camera:

The lens is a Fujinon TV Zoom -- you can click on the image above for a full-sized version. I have no idea what's in front of the M2.
