New Toys for DVX100 or HVX200

What do you need for the DVX or the HVX? As the manufacturer of the Sticky Pod, my suppliers want to know what else I'm working on. I could use some ideas. I was thinking of something along the lines of the Fig Rig or possibly lens attachments, or something everyone could use, but just does not exist yet.

What would work for you? Just give me some ideas, maybe scratch it out on a piece of paper, and I can engineer it from there.

Oh yeah, think about the price you would be willing to pay?

A carrying case for the stickypod would be great. I bought a Spider brace and I think there is a market there for an affordable type device.

Hey stickypod.

How about a NICE matte box/rod support/4x4 filter holder that ROTATES?

I know of a few but price is high. Might just have to make something myself, but I do believe this is an item that would sell well. Target price of $300 - $500 should get something usable I'd surmise.

Darn, I really need something that can be controlled externally though; like the rotation of the polarizer filter: one that should be remote controlled: now there's a novel idea! ;-)

Check this clip:
Polarizer Test (6mb, a few seconds long)

The problem is that the polarizer needs to be rotated to adjust for the camera's new angle to the window. Having this filter's rotation EASILY controlled would definitely be welcome.
Well, anyway, it's a specialized application, maybe, but the product is a much needed one: rods/matte box/4x4 filter holder.

Matte box would be good

Matte box would be good

Hey vidled,

The mattebox, no problem. The rod support, no problem. The filter holder, no problem. But the rotating filter, that's a problem. I bet that remote control servos for model cars would work. As for the matte box, support rods and filter holder, with the proper mold, I think these could be stamped out by the hundreds and sold for a very reasonable price. The question becomes, who uses a matte box? Is it a necessity in most cases or just a luxury? If we sold them for a low enough price, would everyone buy one? Sometimes you can create a market just by offering a low price. Look what it did for Bill Gates :)

Let's start with the matte box. What's the best way to attach?
How do wo make it universal for all camera models (DVX and HVX)?
Is there a common size among all of them that will allow for this type of attachment?

We should do a vote to see who uses some of these products and at what price they would buy them?

Spider Brace looks good.

Spider Brace looks good.

hey dat,

I like the Spider Brace. The product is simple and cost effective. It's only $64.95 and I think that's a good price. I like the simplicity of their design. It does what you need it to do and there's no frills.

Would you change the design of the Spider Brace?
Does it lack something you need?

I have been thinking of a carry case for the Sticky Pod. I was thinking more along the lines of a brief case. I found a hard side case at Home Depot for just a few dollars that would work great. It's down the hardware aisle. I was trying to come up with a nylon bag for it, but all the parts would just scratch up the base and bang around in your camera bag. Unfortunately, I can't find a reasonably priced hard sided carrier. If I find one, I'll post it here :)

I'd prefer a soft carry case for the stickypod over hard case....easier to stash in other cases or luggage.

I think if you can build a Spider brace with built in focus control, then you'd be on to something. I bought the Libec ZC-3DV and make it work with the Spider. There has to be an easier more user friendly way....cost under $150.

that makes sense

that makes sense

I get it. Make the spider with adjustable controls. Isn't that what the VariZoom is all about? Oh but wait, I just looked at their site and everything is $199+ for the controller only. Maybe we should look at those RC controllers. Worth a shot. I have to run some errands tomorrow by a local RC shop, I'll stop in and see what I can conjure up.

There are DIY controllers on this site and I'm not ashamed to say that they are above my 'shop' skills. I heard about the Libec on this site and it was good price....only thing I don't like w/ it and the Spider brace is the awkward positioning of the Libec......still better then what I had before(nothing), but I can see a margain for improvement.

Hey.....maybe you can come up with a cheap, reliable, HD capture device?

got some ideas

got some ideas

I made it to that local hobby shop and got some ideas and found some component manufacturers. I'm looking them up online and trying to create some components. My thought was to make a device that will zoom a camera and make it universal for all camera models. I know it can be done, but how to mount it.

The switch device would come with an interchangeable cord to make it user friendly for any device. Just velcro the zoom switch into place and go.

As for the cheap HD capture, that's out of my capabilities. Are you referring to the SD100?

What about fold up and down wheels for the spiderbrace fold up when not in use and fold down when I want a ground rolling shoot.

good idea

good idea

that's a cool idea. I have to think about how that would work. it would add a lot of weight to the brace. maybe detachable wheels.

I like the skater dolly (p+s technik), but since the object is patented, I doubt there is any way of making such a thing without breaking any laws. You had to come up with a different design or something, just to say it's not a knock off. But something like that for a reasonable price would be great :)

A shouldermount for all the semi-pro handycams (hate that word, but even the HVX still is a handycam...) would definitely sth A LOT of user will buy (why? well, I´m just being a wiseass here...)
serious sth like the movietube (www.movietube.com, don´t know if it´s patented though...) can´t be that expensive to built, you could even team up with one of the 35mm adapter developers and offer the whole set up!
The spiderbrace looks so cheap, I wouldn´t pay 20 bucks for it... And as stated: the shoulder mount should have a zoom control and hey, just add a focus grip and I´m sold!
And an additional battery mount!
And a mount for firestore devices! Would also get more weight on the shoulder part!
I would pay up to 300$ to make, lets say the HVX, shouldermountable and usable for ENG-style work.

Something else that´s been on my wishlist for a while: an easyrig...
hm, this threat could start a copyright debate
...

I love my Spiderbrace. Simple and effective. Here's what I'd like from say a Spiderbrace Pro or StickyShoulderPod:

1) A joint on each leg so I can use it as a highhat and tilt the camera up, down or dutch it slightly... or just level the horizon line if the ground is slightly uneven. ($150?)

2) Rotating wheels to turn it into a Skaterdolly. Detachable would be cool.($100?)

3) Optional weight/battery holder on the backside to balance camera on the shoulder. ($75?)

4) Optional Zoom, Focus, Iris controller that's easy to use without removing either hand from the grips. ($200?)

I'd buy this in a heartbeat.

i think we're on to something

i think we're on to something

great ideas! i think we're starting to come up with something for everyone. keep those ideas coming so we have a product with plenty of options to offer.

man, you got my gears turnin. i like what's coming out of this.

i have a show this weekend in Denver, but next weekend i should start bending some pipe and do some testing.

Hm, before bending the hell out of some pipes you maybe should look at this:

seems to be a cavision shouldermount, this version with two grips comes to sth like 400$ on b&h - I guess this doesn´t have to be that expensive...
And why should we want another spiderbrace?
It´s fairly cheap and its out there...

I can't wait to use my Stickypod. BTW way, the fact that you know all the words to Will Smith's "Summertime" makes you cool in my book. I didn't realized how "pimped out" the S-Pod was until I saw your demo CD.

As for ideas this may be far out but how about a motorized or remote control propeller based Stickypod. I guess it wouldn't really be "sticky" but you it would be propeller based like one of those remote control helicopters. You'd attach it to your camera's hotshoe and it would lift the camera as far as this type of thing would go and it would allow you to get some great low ariels. (Think about 30 - 50 feet in the air).

The bottom would be a Stickypod "cushion base" made like the other bases but wider and it would have full padding under it for a gentle landing. Risky? Only about as much as it is using the Stickypod in general. I'd pay about $300 - $400 for it. Of course you'd risk your camera dropping 50 feet versus from a car at possible high speed.

There needs to be instructions or some kind of fail safe for gentle landings just like you gave on your CD and it should be able to hold a ten pound camera so it would be able to hold the DVX, HVX, GL line, XLs and the Sony HDV line. Think about it. Of course I'd get one for free for giving you the idea right. :)

a plastic flying foam padded sticky pod?

a plastic flying foam padded sticky pod?

that's a good idea, but knowing a little (very little) about aerodynamics, my only question would be how to get a square camera with a large lens to fly? i like the idea, i could see plenty of people wanting to use such a device. i think risking a $10K camera on a $400 dollar remote plane might be a little difficult to overcome. i know of one customer in California that will be using high def cameras and a Sticky Pod Director inside a cessna aircraft that he will customize for the Sticky Pod Director and then capture high def video of properties, wildfires, and other disasters. the idea would be to provide substantially higher resolution videos than current satellite technologies. not to mention he could use it for films and commercials.

enjoy your new Sticky Pod and many thanks for the business :dankk2:
