Hello All
i just started up a seagate 300 gig outboard hardrive ,
I was told os 10 tiger does not recognize all 300 gigs .
I was also told to get a smaller outboard harddrive for eding my project .
Any suggestions are well appreciated .
Thanks
Bruce

OS X Tiger not recognizing all 300 gig drives sounds really suspicious. I can see OS X not recognizing some drives paritioned or formatted weirdly, but to actually out right reject the hardware sounds like OS X has serious problems that I've never not once experienced or heard about. I use 300 gig drives at work ALL the time, both maxtor and WD (I prefer seagate myself) and I've never had any issues.

Is your drive pre-formatted or something and OS X is simply not recongizing the file system?

Bruce...

I have a 500-gig RAID and my Mac can see every bit of it. If you're running Tiger then having a drive in excess of 300 gigabytes shouldn't be a problem. As mentioned in the other post, check to see if your drive is properly formatted under OS 10. Right out of the box the drive may not have the right format.

Hello,
Thanks for the response ,
In answer to your question The hardrive was NOT formatted with os 10 tiger (this is something I wanted to do and may still do .
First the harddrive is a Seagate 300 GB (pushbutton backup) usb 2.0 firewire 7,200 rpm 8mb cache for pc pr mac .
The seagate is linked with a mac power book ( g 4 )17 inch display lap top running os 10 tiger .
I only loaded ( 0n the laptop) the dics utility that came with the seagate.
This contains "Bounce Back Express "a back up software for mac and pc .
The advise I got was that-
untill I load os10 tiger directly onto the seagate drive , the seagate will function as a data bank only.
But(according to one "expert") once I load os 10 tiger the laptop will interact(as a true second drive ) only with a portion of the total 300gigs .
I loaded all back up applications and partitioned the drive into 12 sectors with 23gigs each .
Right now to test this -I am running a game (no one lives forever )which loads easily to the laptop.
So
Any advice on the following is appreciated :

1) should I load os tiger on the seagate drive ?
2) will my laptop simply mirror copy its own operating system?(and how?)
or do I need to buy another copy of the os10 tiger ?
Thanks for the advice so far .
and thanks for a response to these questions .
Cheers
Bruce

If you want to use the Seagate as an optional boot drive then you can install Tiger on it. But if you're just going to use it for file storage then there's no need to do that. Just have to format it with the Apple Disk Utility.

If you do decide to install OS 10 on that drive, then you can use the installation disks that came with your computer. No need to buy another copy of OS 10.

Was the "expert" you consulted from the Apple Store or just someone who said he knows about and actually worked with Mac OS 10?

The "expert" worked in a thrift shop repairing computers of all kind.
I should stop off at the apple store for more info
Thanks for the reply

If you can, make an appointment to see the people at the "genius bar". Worthwhile as they'll give you straight, well-informed answers that won't cost you a dime, and won't require the efforts of the MythBusters to wade through. :-)
