Importing real DVD into FCP

Hi guys, I am putting together a DVD for my little cousins sweet sixteen based on the footage I shot, and I would like to integrate some cinematic moments from a few of her favorite films into FCP for editing into the DVD i'm making.

I physicaly own all of the films that I would like to use, but how would I go about importing them into FCP for editing? Do I need to compress them or otherwise? When I put one into my mac, they are in VIDEO_TS folder in VOB format.

Any ideas all? :dankk2:

You need to break the encryption first -- people call it ripping... though I've done it myself I refuse to answer any questions about it. Sorry -- however, a quick google will give you things you've never even dreamed about.

DVDxDV will get you to the point you need after you break the encryption.

nope... it seems to take in the DVD but the pixels are compltely ruined and green, and it won't function at all after loading it... = /

Any other ideas?

(EDIT: just saw above post... will look but... can anyone "recommend" one of these type of "apps" that will work on Mac OS to "me" by some "means"?)

Thanks :D

Exactly right, DVDxDV will transcode the MPeg2 to DV Codec Quicktime BUT you have to use a "Ripping" program to break the copy guard. Then you can use DVDxDV.

Now to archive DVDs of all of those VHS tapes of the kids I've used the Sima GoDVD CT-2 (now the CT-200) to make an analog copy of them. It would do the same thing DVD to what ever has audio and video inputs. It's marketed for making back-up copies. It doesn't do a Digital copy, which I suppose is how they get around Hollywood's radar. It takes composite or S-Video in and has 4 "enhancement" settings, also ONLY the video goes thru the GoDVD audio is patched directly.

I don't know if approx. $100 is prohibitive for this purpose but, FYI.

use MactheRipper (free) and then use DVDxDV on the ripped VIDEO_TS folder. DVDxDV has some issues sometimes, but will do the job...

why make this hard guys???
just play your DVD in a DVD player,
and just capture the footage live into FCP.
Why bother ripping and encoding/wasting time?
Its one thing to rip an entire DVD, another to get some quick scenes.

How would I do this? This surely sounds like the best way.

I agree, Cinematize is the best, more affordable, great quality de-muxing.

If it is copy protected, running it off a DVD player into FCP may not work. Depends on the DVD player. MOST will detect a recording device on the other end and cut the signal. Some won't. Depends on the copy protection method and hardware being used.

You'd connect your DVD player to your Mini-DV camera. If it has pass through, you can just play the DVD and the camera will pass it through to the Firewire cable. In FCP you'd set to capture from a non-controlable device.

If the camera has no pass through ability, you'll have to record the scenes to Mini-DV tape, then capture into FCP.

Cinematize looks great. (EDITED: Audio problem fixed.)

But Cinematize aside, I tried out what you suggested with the DVD player and the camera, I currently only have my XL2 with me. I connected the analog cables (yellow, white, red) from the DVD player to the XL2, and I do not see any video output on the camera. Also, I connected my firewire to the XL2 and then tried to capture through FCP, setting capture from "non-controlable device" and FCP says it does not read any video either. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks again.

I don't use an XL2, I don't know. Check the XL2 user manual and see if this is even possible.

Heh, just checked. Had to turn av->dv on. Got the following message:

COPYRIGHT PROTECTED
DUBBING RESTRICTED

(edited: I know how to take care of this problem = D)

the pass-thru type of "conversion" is what I was recommending the GoDVD for, it would strip the copyguard and pass analog video to your camera.

I've used it on many of the kid's VHS tapes to make a DVD "back up".

Which is what it's "legal" purpose is. They did sell them at Best Buy, and of course Amazon.

There are devices like the Formac that works well for converting anolog to digital and they just came out with new software upgrade for the mac. I use it to capture footage back into quicktime form dvds that I have created and dont have loaded up in my computer. its alot quicker to just grab what you need this way depending on what quality that you need.
