Overwhelming Nostalgia for the 90's

Hi,

I've been feeling weird lately. Most of the time things are cool and I'm pushing forward, but sometimes I feel an overwhelming nostalgia for the 90's. It's like back in those days my taste and sensibilities were in alignment with some sort of current that was sweeping through life. Now, I just can barely relate to anything in these current times.

I don't like the graphic design trends in mainstream media and products, I don't like most music or films that come out (remakes, remakes, remakes), or films scores within the films. I don't really like video games anymore. I could go on and on. There are still a lot of good if you search hard enough, but I like seeing what I consider awesome in the mainstream. I was personally very happy with the Kill Bills, so there are exceptions, but does that really count? Tarantino was drifting back to another time and place in his vision too. It validates me somehow when I can agree with the mainstream. Now, it's like the heads of these major companies poll what I like and do the opposite just to piss me off. j/k

I feel like I'm going against the current instead of with it. I don't want to change just to go with the current. I won't. I also don't want to be one of those freaky guys stuck in the 70's with a mullet, driving a 50 ft long Camaro, wearing gold chains around their neck, and an open butterfly collar shirt showing their hairy chests.

Another big part of it is; I had really high hopes for the year 2000 and beyond. The 90's felt like they were building up to something big. As a kid growing up in the 80's (which were also cool) I always thought, "Wow, the year 2000, we'll have hover cars, robot maids like in the jetsons, oh man it's going to be great" To me the 2000's haven't had a lot of "personality" like other decades. Maybe it's just hard to judge being within these times. The 20's - 90's all had very distinct traits. I'm just not seeing that now, or anything I want to particularly remember.

I talked to my dad about this and asked his opinion about it. He claims that the 50's were the best. He said he went through a similar sadness when the 60's rolled around. But then again a lot of people loved the 60's. I guess it just depends on the person. Perhaps economy and war have something to do with it? Am I just getting old? Is this something common? I feel so isolated.

sorry for the rant

Its funny... maybe its cause I was barely knowing what life was in the 80's and 90's but I think the 2000's have been pretty stinkin' amazing.

Ya know, it really would. I'd blast them with a high pressure water hose.

I nailed a kid with the snowblower last winter.:kali: He shouldn't have been standing in my yard. Sure, he's the paperboy, but still...

Cool, that's the kind of feedback I'm looking for. I like your perspective. I also want to know if anyone can relate to what I'm saying.

My life has changed dramatically from the year 2000-2006. And, events like 9/11 have impacted me tremendously (no politics, just speaking of the event)

Well you're 26. And so am I. The nineties were our formative years and we were in alignment with the times. And then we got old. And current music sucks. It happens. :(

Of course, a lot of the kids who are sixteen right now will be saying they miss the good ol' music of Britney Spears in ten years... suckers. :nads:

Welcome to growing up. :)

I know exactly how you feel.

I'm 45 now and I feel the same way about the 70's and early 80's. My favorite bands were popular and still cranking out albums. MTV was playing videos from my favorite bands. Television shows were geared for me and my friends. Like you said - there was a current and I was right in line with it.

I've definitely had periods like you mention, but overall, I have never been in tune with my times. In HS, I listened to bands from the 60's and 70's and hated the 80's music of the times. Even now, as I'm sure is evident from many of my posts, I don't like a lot of what's going on in American movies, and look at other time periods and places for the kinds of movies I want to see.

But the big thing that's come with my 30s is a level of confort with that. My tastes are very much mine, and developed through MY experiences. And that's a good feeling. I dunno, as I get older, I see things in broader terms and don't worry so much about what is popular and whether or not I jive with it. As I said, my tastes are mine now.

Well put. Having just turned 30 last month, I've been finding more and more that I don't really care what the cool thing to do/watch/listen to is. I don't waste my time trying to fit in anymore. Let's face it, I never really fit in to begin with.:)

You know I can't read half of your posts cause that frickin' avatar freaks me out.

:)

what is this decade called anyway, the 00's? We need a good name for it before we can start griping or revelling in things.

Instead of looking to the present, or even the future, you might want to try digging a little deeper in the past.

For the last few years I have been discovering great films, filmmakers, bands, and trends that emerged decades ago. I either never knew they existed or just ignored it as "old-timer crap"..

For example:

Music:

This one band called "The Beatles"
"My Bloody Valentine"
"Led Zep"
Grunge-era music
Late 80's early 90's Dream Pop
etc...

Filmmakers:

Woody Allen
Godard
Altman
Hitchcock
Billy Wilder
Frank Capra
John Houston

etc...

Hell, I've even found "new" movie stars to fall in love with.

Anna Karina
James Cagney
Chaplin
Marx Bros.
James Stewart
etc...

Of course I'm naming obvious ones, but look around a litle bit and you might just find something you like. :)

I miss the Fresh Prine of Bel Air.....damn that show was hilarious....

Now this is the story all about how
My life got flipped, turned upside down
And Id like to take a minute just sit right there
Ill tell you how I became the prince of a town called bel-air

Do-Do-Dodo-Do-Do-DOO

In West Philadelphia Born and Raised
On a playground is where i spent most of my days
Chillin' out max and relaxin' all cool
And all shootin' some B-Ball outside of School

When a couple of guys, They were up to no good
Started makin' trouble in my neighborhood
Got in one little fight and my mom got scared
She said, "You're movin' with your auntie and your uncle in Bel-Air!"

Do-Do-Dodo-Do-Do-DOO

I whistled for a cab and when it came near
the License plate said fresh and had a dice in the mirror
If anything I could say that this cab was rare
But I thought now forget it, yo home to bel-air!

Do-Do-Dodo-Do-Do-DOO

I...pulled... up to the house about seven or eight
And I yelled to the cabbie, "Yo, homes smell you later!"
Looked at my kingdom I was finally there
To sit on my throne as the prince of bel-air

All these years and i can still remember that song

"Life moves pretty fast. If you dont stop and look around once in a while, it could pass you by.''

Ferris Bueller
