San Francisco School Of Digital Filmmaking

anyone here heard of this place?

http://www.sfdigifilm.com/

I'm fearing I've reached the limit I can teach myself without any outside help, and this place looks interesting. I've rsvp'd for their open house, Sunday.

This isn't a "to film school or not to film school" thread, just wondering if anyone knows anything about this place.

I haven't heard of this place but if you are interested, DEFINITELY go to the open house. Get a feel for the instructors and see what the facility has to offer. And, if you are lucky enough to see any current students there, GRAB 'EM! Students will be more than forthcoming with the pros and cons of any program.

I'm sure one or two of them will say, "you'll get back what you put into it", but definitely ask about the instructors. That is key. I just finished school and where I went the instructors were not teachers but were in the business. It sounds great but you ran into a situation when 50% of your teachers were flat out AWFUL. So, that is very important when you are spending money for school. And, if the school is just offering you the classes but no piece of paper or diploma at the end of the ride, it makes it even MORE important to ask a lot of questions.

Good luck.

that is exactly the kind of school it is. Almost all the faculty are "working professionals", and the only offer experience, credit, and contacts, no degree. Which is why i investigated this place further. I want experience more than theory (although theory is good too), and frankley i can't see ever getting a degree anyway since I'll never complete complete the math and english requirements.

I'll try to keep an eye out for the things you described, anything specific I should look for or ask?

Yes! Find out as much as you can about the instructors. Trust me on this. Don't be seduced by their 'working knowledge'. If they can't teach, it'll mean nothing. Besides, what are these "working professionals" doing in a classroom anyway? Find out HOW LONG the instructors have been there? Find out if they already have the classes slated for next semester with their instructors. If they tell you, "not yet", or if they tell you that they have new instructors all the time, be VERY leery...

It takes a very special kind of "working professional" who can orchestrate a very successful class. If there are a lot of first time teachers, I'd say, "thanks but no thanks". So, do your research, and truly, try to talk to current and/or former students about the program.

thanks for the info. I didn't mean my last post to sound like i was blowing you off. I was pointing out that this school is exactly what you said to be careful of. I'll try to talk to students and get as much info on the instructors as possible.

anyone else heard of the school?
