Talk me out of the Rebel XT and into the D50

I hope I didn't imply that the final images would be better with the D50 over the XT... I have big hands and the D50 fits me perfectly... the XT makes me feel clumsy.

Let's face it... that shot of the cat is awesome... clearly either cam can deliver pleasing images and the XT is probably a little more pro in the feature department... plus extra res... personally I'd rather you got the XT.

That's your deal entirely... I think the D50 would be more fun to use in my hands... maybe your hands and/or priorities are different.

It's all good either way... I don't think most people on these boards care which cam you get... I may be one of the few that doesn't even care if you have a DVX... I could shoot good stuff with an XL2 also... I just don't care.

I wish you guys would put up an XT thread... and post some lens info after each shot... the thing that impressed me in the D50 thread is how good the pictures were with cheap kit glass.

I saw some online reviews comparing the D50 with the D70s and they both used the kit glass... well since the D70s comes with a $300 lens instead of a $100 lens I thought that was retarded... same glass please. I'll tell you right now that if somebody gets an XT and puts on the 70-200L 2.8 IS that their pics are gonna' blow most of the Nikon shots away... I said this a LONG time ago in the Nikon Vs. Canon thread... using the same grade of optics I can see a difference in Nikon and Canon pics... there's something about them that's hard to describe but I know it when I see it... I'd almost bet (and I'd like to really know for myself if I'm full of poop or not) that you could post 12 pics mixed of Canon and Nikon... and that I could tell you which were taken with which... I like how they both look, but they look somehow different to me.

I agree that there's a "look" to pictures even if you want to avoid the comparisons to film...

Plain and simple... get whatever cam you WANT... I fully intend to upgrade in a couple of years if I get the D50 now... once cams are all full frame you probably won't care if it was 6mp or 8mp... 16mp cams are here and they're going to be cheap in a few years.

cheez... that one shot of your daughter would have to sell anybody... that is one of my favorite pics on the entire forum... you should crop it down the right side of her nose (looking at the pic... that right side) and horizontally on the forhead... then you have an amazing shot as good as any I've seen... even counting Joey Lawrence's stuff... the fact that you got that pic with the stock lens is making it really hard for me to commit to the cost of 2.8 glass.

jeez, thanks!!! which one though? the b&w, the color closeup, or the beach shot? why don't you crop it like you are talking about and repost on the d50 thread. i'd like to see what you are talking about.

...why don't you start another thread asking to see some of the DVXuser forum members xtrebel pics? I'm sure they'd love to share.

There are a ton of Canon users here so a Canon XT thread will be great.

Alright... I did it. Hopefully I'll have something to contribute to one of the threads soon.

Jeremy's analysis was right on. In addition to the basic camera functions I would compare the menuing systems on both cameras. Are the functions you want to use intuitively accessible or do you have to traverse an arcane set of button and knob twist combinations to get a particular setting? Oops, there went that decisive moment while I was fiddling with my aperture priority setting...

This one here... and my crop sucks, but you get the gist.

I had to say... that's one of the pictures that first caught my eye and made me take a closer look at the d50.

However, I've almost decided to go with my initial instincts to get the Canon. Who knows what's coming in the future, but based on what's available now... I think I like what Canon has to offer as far as the next level up (should I decide to upgrade later). And as mentioned, Canon glass is bit cheaper and I definitely plan to upgrade that in the next few months. So, whatever small difference there is in price... it will be offset soon enough. I also really wanted to work with RAW (at least to experiment with it) and to do so with Nikon will cost me more money (for software).

I really appreciate all of you taking the time to give me advice in either direction. Here's hoping the grip size is not an issue!!!:undecided

Yeah... much better... you got my point.

See, what's impressing me in this shot is first the overall look... I like the background contrast... I also like the lower crop, but I wanted to see that it was a hummer in the BG. Even though it probably wasn't your intention this picture could be like a child actor in hollywood... something like that (sublime wealth or something?)

The way the cam handles the light metering on the face versus the nearly blown out BG... it's almost like you were doing some Joey Lawrencing to the shot...

That is just a really impressive picture... it's the light metering that's blowing me away. Don't you wish the DVX could handle light so well? You could set up this exact shot by mm and f-stop and yet there's no way it would ever look like this... I don't mean the super-high detail either... I mean the light metering. It's shots like this that made my decision really easy. This is the shot I was talking about when I was describing a "look"...

That's not a refridgerator shot... that's a living room enlargement shot, or even a top 10 contest shot. I was just saying to Yankee in a PM that I've been all over the Tamron website trying to decide on the lens I want to go with... and I haven't seen anything in their gallery that's this good... you're really making it hard for me to spend the extra money beyond the kit lens.

Cheezweezl,

I agree with MattinSTL, that shot of your daughter is amazing, one of the best I have seen.

However, I definitely prefer the original layout.

I think the shadows on the left side of her face are wonderful and I hate to see them cropped out.

i like the pic both ways. thanks for the cropping idea. so far i am a fan of the stock lens. i have gotten lots of great, sharp images with it. i didn't do much post on that pic. just some unsharp mask and levels. a true joey lawrence shot would have some serious dodge/burn which is the big key to his surreal look.
