i see no difference between 60i and 24p timeline slo mo..

I'm tryin to figure out this 60i slo mo trick but i'm not sure whats happening. I tried putting 60i footage on a 24p timeline with fore resampling. I used the velocity envelope and slowed the footage to 40%. I rendered out and had fairly smooth slo mo. But then to compare, i put the 60i footage in a 60i timeline and slowed to 40% and rendered out. I see absolutely no difference between the two final results. The 60i timeline footage appears just as smooth as the stuff from the 24p timeline. Whats goin on here? Am i simply not doing the 24p trick correctly? Is vegas somehow smoothing my 60i timeline footage?

If you're looking for a difference between them in smoothness, there won't be one -- not sure why you thought there would be?

well i thought just slowing down regular old 60i footage resulted in choppy video. Where as putting 60i into a 24p timeline and slowing it to 40% would be a way to achieve smooth slow motion video as it would create new frames out of the half frames from the 60i footage. Why does everyone talk about how to get smooth slow motion then if theres no trick involved?

you are dropping 60i clips in 24p TL then slowmo 40% AND ? then you render out as 29.97 ? or 24p or 24p + pull down ??

have you dropped both rendered clips ( rendered exact same section) in TL ( one top track other below) and A-B comparered each frame ?

i know when you have real 24p clips (with removed pull down ) there is a difference between slo mo 24p and 29.97 ( with pull down ) slo mo ...

ALSO note that there is a difference between ALL slo- mo when you have Vegas resample and DO not resample ... IMO slo mo resample tends to look alike ( it overlaps fields/frames) VS. do not resample does not overlap fields/frames ... if you want to see the difference frame by frame - on a slo-mo section have vegas preview at preview (auto ) setting = no resample VS. BEST (auto) setting = resamples .. look at it frame by frames start with BEST -when you see overlaps (2 frames) switch to preview

The reason why 60i video is better for slo-mo is because it has 60 motion samples per second -- and that's a lot, especially compared to 24p.

It's 24p which looks choppy when you try to slow it down, because it only has 24 samples of motion per second, and that's not much.

In other words, the difference in where things are between 24p frames is a lot more than the difference between where things are between 60i fields -- a moving object moves a lot more between 24p frames than it does between 60i fields, if you were to view them individually. So, slowing 24p makes it look more jumpy.

But whether you slow 60i to 40% on a 24p timeline, or slow it to 40% on a 60i timeline, it's still moving 40% as fast -- showing 24 motion samples either way -- so it should look the same. The only difference between the two is that in 60i, Vegas will have to resample the frames, whereas on the 24p timeline, it won't. But that's a "generation loss" issue, not a motion issue, and a single generation loss at DV resolutions is trivial.
