Yes, I've taken the MySpace plunge

OMG! Well, I guess it's important to one's status as a filmmaker these days. :)

I suppose I'll have to follow suit.

Myspace might seem lame, but it's the reason I got my first job directing a music video.

The singer was looking for people on myspace and my profile somehow caught her eye. She messaged me and the rest is history! :)

Must be the headdress.

LOL! Terry, if you find a profile out there you really dig save it as a favorite & I can get you a link to a tool where you put that person's ID number into a box, and WHAMMY, you've got the same exact layout, but with your information, pictures, etc.

I made fun of all my friends for being on there then I moved away and had to jump on the bandwagon to keep in touch

I GOT HARASSED BY PJC!!! :)

hey, anyone get a sh!t load of porn spam from myspace? I keep getting requests for friends but from porn sites. Sometimes I get 15 requests in a row at the same time. Last night after i checked out the first request in my email, it loaded myspace at the approve/deny page and I clicked on the profile to see if it was a real person and the next thing i know my mail gets 15 requests in a row.... twice. WTF!!!

I'm curious...
I read the quote:
"I'm a Christian film maker, but that doesn't mean I want to make Christian films. Understand?"

So, if you aren't making christian films, or catering to that demographic, why even bother mentioning it?

Thats like me saying, "I'm a white man, but I'm not making films for white people"
or "I'm a liberal, but I don't make liberal biased films"
or "I'm a democrat, but I won't make political films"
or "I'm pro-choice but I won't make films about babies"
or etc etc etc.

I mean why even mention a personal aspect of your life if it has no bearing on your art? Especially if it might be controversial or divide any part of your audience?

EDIT:
Also, about myspace, I think that place is the devil. Its nothing more than a hookup site in my opinion. A lot of people claim its great for self promotion, but 9 times out of 10, the only people on there looking for THAT content (as opposed to hookups) are other self promoters. So you're really just promoting yourself to your other self promoters.

... or ... other filmmakers (who may be self promoting) and musicians (who may be self promoting) ect. but all who may have projects you may be interested in or that may be intretested in your project and may want to work on it or who may buy your dvd or who may say "did you see that guy on myspace"

I think that's called networking.

There's a small production company on there that makes really cheap features that loves my work. I'm not nuts about theirs but I know they are going into production soon and I may message them asking if I can volunteer on set for a day or two or observe ... why because I'll be shooting a very low budget feature soon and I want to see how the hell they are doing it and who on their team I might want to work with.

Why wouldn't I want to know about an opportunity like that (especially in my own backyard) even if they are only on their self promoting too?

That's also the majority of the people you will meet at film festival ... other filmmakers promoting their stuff. Yes there's more of that and fewer if any critics or distributors on myspace, but just like at an indie film festival, other filmmakers are still an audience and just like at an indie film festival they can buzz your movie just as well as any one else.

You can get hung up on it being a lame teenage dating site, or you can use it as a tool and limit your more social interactions with people very much like yourself.

Maybe theres more call for someone in a large market like yourself. Smaller markets like the one I'm in are unlikely to provide any good exposure.

Lucidz, I've only had one other person question the quote as potentially controvercial, and out of the hundreds that have seen it, and the scores that have commented/complimented it, I'm good with those stats.

The purpose of it is that in that one little statement I can quickly state that I'm a Christian, but at the same time I'd never want someone to then assume that I'm looking to fill the Christian bookshelves with more product ... only because I typically detest the production value in those works.

I guess I could go on to say specifically what kind of films I will/won't do, but I don't want to ... and really haven't had the need to.

For myself, it's certainly not a hook up spot ... just a fun page to network with & BLAST it with promotions for the latest film, etc. I've gotten enough interest already with it of people saying they're looking forward to the DVD, that even if I only sell an extra 25 DVD's through MySpace, well ... that's an extra $500 or so in sales, and would be worth it. But I'm hoping I'm surprised, and that word spreads ... as Jack said, it's about what kind of buzz you can generate.
