New system always has choppy video and stuttering audio playback

Matt Grunau

Adobe Demigod
Hi all. I recently got a new system:

AMD 3500+ Processor
2 gigs CORSAIR DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200)
Asus a 8V Motherboard
Nvidia 6800 Ultra video card
2 Seagate Barracuda 250GB 7200 RPM Hard Drives in RAID 1 (or whichever splits the info and sends half to each drive)
Onboard sound card (Soon to ba changed)
Onboard Lan and Firewire
Case, power supply, and blah blah

Whenever I am editing in Vegas, even when there are NO plugins or filters applied, even just a simple drag a clip into the timeline and deselect all the Audio auto plugins, and hit play, the playback is choppy and the audio skips like mad.

Ram prevews are clean, and the thing can playback uncompressed AVI's from the desktop without the slightest hiccup. But in vegas, the video and audio are laggy. Preview is set to Preview Auto, and still the chop. Iv'e tried all the monitor window settings, Best, Good, Draft, and she still skips on me.

Is there something I'm doin wrong, or something that needs to be enabled?

I have a much older P4 3.0 G with the same ram, an Nvidia 5200 Video card, one Western Digital 7200 rpm 180 gig hard drive and an Audigy II, and it's ok. The audio is always fine and the video chops only when there are effects or during transitions.

So, I'm stumped.

Are you running Asio drivers for the soundcard. Also make sure in your device manager...under IDE/ATA that your primary and secondary setups is running with the DMA mode enabled and not P10. Also upgrade all your drivers. You should also have a dedicated partition in that raid setup for your operatiing system only so it is not sharing the same resources as your data. IE a separate C drive at about 10gig's should do.

No ASIO option available, just Microsoft Sound Mapper, Direct Sound Suround Mapper (currently used) and Windows Classic Wave Driver.

The hard drives are set to DMA when available, with no partition for the OS & Progs.

I've had plenty of work with vegas on other systems using footage from the C drive, and never had that problem.

Thanks for the ideas.

Hi Rapier_100a ..I am having the same issue ..I have a pent 3.0 with 2 g of ram and a 256 video card . sound is thru Asus .
I have no issues with sound but the video playback is real choppy.
I have to pre render everything to watch a scene .
This is time consuming .
All my files , Veg included are on a separate drive .
Windows is set to best performance , no background items running as screen savers or other programs .
So I too am interested in a solution .

6.0d here, but 6.0b did the same before the update.

I don't know if it's the RAID, or the AMD, but something is screwy.

HOTFIX for Dual Core AMD with SP2

HOTFIX for Dual Core AMD with SP2

Try this hotfix-maybe it can work..but reading from a number of forums it seems to be common problem with that VIA chipset as a whole. Perhaps you can exchange it for a NF3/4 chipset board that has more stable drivers since VIA is usually not as good as nvidia. Not to mention the availability of having dual channel for memory.

The VIA Chipset? I don't know what that is.

It is your Northbridge processor on your Asus board (VIA K8T800 Pro). Most boards are either Nvidia based or VIA based boards. Also what is the size of your power supply? If your 12v and 5v reading's more than 5% off then you may need more juice to run everything that is in your rig. AT least 400w or better is always desired.

The power supply I don't know. That I'll have to check. I didn't order that part.

Do you have the video scopes set to live monitoring/preview (whatever it's called)? Check by closing the video scopes window.

2- I don't think your power supply would be the problem here. If you really wanted to checK, download Asus' motherboard monitoring tool. It might be called somethingAI. It'll show you the voltages that your computer is pulling.

In terms of wattage, your computer probably only pulls 150W-200W max. A good brand name 300W power supply should be fine. Some manufacturers fudge their PSU specs, so not all power supplies are created equal.

*This is an oversimplification, but my point is your PSU should be fine the way it is.

it is a 480 watt power supply.

No scopes are open. No effects applied, nothing but staright playing of a file.

I have the Asus probe, and when playing a file, the +12 is 11.968, +5 is 5.026, +3.3 is 3.312.

Still the chop. I think it must be the RAID, but I can't figuyre out why.

What is your virtual memory settings?

Start/control panel/system/advanced/performance options/advanced

It should be set to 1.5 x the ram you have. (ie 1 gig=1534mb)

also what is your dynamic ram preview set...increase it more than 64mb..possibly to the max amount and see if that fixes it.

Also you don't have any antivirus running in the background do you..also look for spyware running in the background using adaware and dump anything that does come up. You shouldn't be connected to the internet when editing anyways so there is no need for antivirus programs like Norton's running in the background. In addition. Turn off windows update if you have it on.

After hearing about this in more than a couple of cases I'm kind of afraid to upgrade to 6.0. I'm at 5.0 right now and everything is fine. How prevelant are these problems?

I am also running an ASUS board.

Tim.

I have dedicated more ram for the preview (max) and set my virtual memory to 2500 mb ( 2 gig memory) and the video is still choppy .
I haven't tried the external drive yet, that will be my next step.

The RAM preview setting doesn't affect general timeline playback. It only increases your buffer if you want to do a dynamic RAM preview, which is a temporary render to RAM
