AT897 shotgun mic? Low sound from actors voice ...

hey guys, im still a little new to the dvx. I just purchased the Audio-Technica AT897 shotgun mic an I'm testing the mic, speaking while at a little bit of a distance, t's not picking up the sound like I thought. Do I have the wrong mic?

I need it to pick up sound clearly from actors when it is being held out of the frame.

Hi Omar, the general rule with most shotguns is that you have to get it within a couple of feet of the actors, and pointed in the direction they are speaking from. You can't have it on the camera 8 feet away and get the sound you want. The farther the mic, the more you have to add amplification at the camera, and you raise the noise bed. The AT897should give you good performance if used well.
