the focus of the editors demo reel

Hey everyone,

I will be putting together a new demo because I am moving to the LA area(Santa Monica) and want to eventually get a job at a posthouse. My concern is that since this is an editors demo reel, should I focus on the juxtoposition and order of shots in the demo reel or should I be focusing on the edits in the individual scenes in the reel? I love editing to music and have developed a style for it, but would it be a good idea to put together a music video type demo reel or just show (what consider to be)my best edits individually. I really appreciate any advice as I will be moving real soon and need to put something together shortly.

Use your instinct about how to edit together your stuff. Be able to show a wide array of editing (fast tweaky editing, to the slowest disolves of pans) Show that you are capeable of creating a compelling story out of not so compelling footage. It helps if the person who is reviewing the footage has either

a) seen a bunch of people try to edit an event, but usually falls flat (like something about golf or bridges, something boring). But yours is interesting

or b) Something that the person knows is close by. For example, maybe a short doc over the SF bridge.

I just got nominated for my reginal emmys (Clevland) For two of my pieces Muncie Dragway and Oliver Winery, so check them out to gague what level of editing you should be at for LA.

And by all means, Good Luck. Its a huge cut throat business. I'm not even out there yet.

hey thanks demistate,

I am going to try a variety of different styles in my reel. My main goal right now is to try and get any work I can, whether it'd be a runner or an assistant editor. I would eventually like to get a job as an editor as opposed to an assistant editor, but I know that takes years. So I'm assuming that if I put together a nice reel I should be able to get the assistant jobs and the such. Thanks for your advice, if you have anything else you'd like to tell me, please go ahead. I need as much advice as I can get. Thanks.
