shotgun quality in different situations

In what real-life situations does shotgun quality make the biggest diff? For example, I just saw a high-end one described as making dialog more understandable in a noisy warehouse (tho noise is still heard).

I take it a sit-down indoor interview isn't the ideal test of shotgun quality, but what is?

to reject the side address sounds -
the warehouse is quit a hard place to judge any mic since usially you have multiple reflections from the walls / ceiling /floor .
an open air situation will give you the best results .
the low fq are usially still penetratie since the microphone becomes more omny as the fq goes down .

if you will go to a busy street , and opposite the shotgun to the passing cars you will get good example for what it reject , be sure you dont have large house in front which reflect the sound back .
try it with sanken and you will be really surprise :-)
there is no way to eliminate 100% of unwonted sounds , but it might change the quality from unusable to more then acceptable .
the indoor situation is more about general house acoustics and not about the mic it self , if the situation is without reverb , you definitely can work with shotgun and check the quality of self noise and the tightness of mic pickup . self noise is something that almost wouldn't bother you in real life you have to be in very quiet place , be very high about the object and try record very quit sounds , the pick up is the most important part which get understanding on the mic behavior when your target goes of axis .
the sound characteristics ( the color of the sound , the worm , differnt behaivior for different voice ) is the most subjective - i love the 416, i love the neumann 81 for indoor situations , love more the sanken for every situation , i hate the rode ****

Interesting, thanks. The combination that interests me is quality and versatility.

Of the mics you love, which would you choose to replace an ME66/K6 -- but I mean one for all shotgun situations: indoor, outdoor, boom, on-camera, etc. The Sanken CS3?

do you need only one mic ?
i was more thinking that in the price of cs-3 ( 1300-1400$, depends on the $), you can get 4073, 2 octavas and g-2 with countryman - looks to me much better deal for versatility , for shot gun only if you floated with cash the cs-3 is my ultimate choice .

i think i'm going to sell my when my sanken cs-3 arrives.

i don't use the 416 hardly at all now and with the cs-3 it will be redunant and i really baby my mics so i doubt there is any real chance of the cs-3 breaking down when i need it.

how much do you want for your 416 matt? if you wanna sell it, PM me and maybe we can work it out. i have a friend who wants one.

on an unrelated note, my 416 died yesterday. well, not died, but suddenly (like between two locations) it was giving low output levels, and hissing. darn. so ive sent it for a quote on repair - does anyone know what the problem could be based on those symptoms? does anyone want to mail me a cs3 to use in the meantime? :)

Exile, I already have the Senn. ME-66 and a Lectrosonics wireless lav. Just wondered if upgrading to a better shotgun would be worth the $$.

ok so you dont need wireless - what about mixeer do you have one ?
the 66 is not in the same leag , that one worse then the rode
if you doing news - its really doesnt matter
