Okay, I'm a student filmmaker and I'm trying to debate what peice of equipment I should get next. So far I have a DVX100a and a sony dcr-hc20 handicam as a tapedeck. What next? Lighting? External mic.? Tripod?
A decent mic should be your next purchase. You can get away with subtle shakiness of handheld and you can survive on using practical and natural lights but your film will be unbearable with bad audio. Many will not admit, but as a director/DP, I will admit that audio is the most important aspect of creating a great film.
You should then get a tripod, even if it is a $30 tripod, get something to stablize the camera. At this point, you can still use practical lighting. Just make sure everything is proberly exposed.
You can even buy some 200W bulbs and fixtures at Wal-Mart and your lighting will look more professional than without. I suggest doing lots of research before you buy. DVXuser is the best place for DIY resources, and many people are willing to share secrets, secrets that may indeed help someone to become better than you are, but I have noticed that the people on these boards are very giving with their time and unselfish.
Finally, the list of things you will need to purchase will never end, so I reccommend doing all the research you can and only buy what you need for the moment.
My first question is, what equipment will the school lend you? There are basic
equipment needs: camera bag and tripod. Your school should have lights, mics,
etc.
