Suggestions for Questions on BTS

Hey all,

I'm currently dong the BTS on a DVD series coming up next week and I would like some comments/suggestions on what you like when watching BTS. Now this can be questions or even footage that is shown. I've been watching all kinds of movie behind the scenese recently and have some good ideas plus I have a list of questions that the producer would liked asked but I would like to hear from my dvxuser pals.

I've been developign some BTS ideas myself and I've been wanting to delve into doing a highly interactive making of/shot breakdown kind of thing. Something where you can watch a shot and it have certain points where you can hit a button on the remote and go into a mini BTS of that part of the shot. I guess it would take some authoring skills, but the more you can get the audeince involved, the better product you will have, IMO.

That seems cool I guess it depends on how the series goes and what type of shots they do. I'm going to need to get a copy of the episodes before I can do finish the bts

I suppose it depends on the film. Action films I like to see the training that went into the fighting or weapons. Sci-Fi or CG heavy films I like to see what went into that. Horror films - I like the development of effects and maybe an application docu. I also like interviews with the cast while in the filming process and also just candid stuff - what the cast was doing when on set but not filming or at breaks during training, or invading them during lunch between takes. The cast, but in real life.

If your film has a distinct visual style, a seperate docu with the DP about his lighting, vision for the style and how he's achieving it on set and what will need to be done in post.

I also like to see the initial auditions of the cast and maybe their first screen tests.

I'm in the same boat as you and I'm just making sure I document everything so I have it if I want it.

If I'm watching a film that has an attractive leading lady... (Jessica Alba, say)... I like any BTS that has her in it.

Great. I got about 2 hours of footage or their first reading with all the cast. so that will work out great

BTS stuff that's all about how amazingly talented everyone is make me go a big rubbery one. Not saying everyone should rag on everyone else's faults, but give me something more interesting then self-congratulation with no evidence. Show how the director and crew turned something potentially devastating into something amazing. Follow three seperate members of the cast and crew around for twenty minutes each every hour and find out what they're doing to make it through the shooting day. I think the stories and footage you'd get would be great. Especially if you had interviews with everyone afterwards where you could get a hindsight perspective.

Keep the camera rolling for the whole shoot. Get as much as poss. for me I always like Tech / Big shots setup...People enjoying themselves and having a laugh...Writer/ Director/ Producer working relationships...FX comp...Stunt work...Cast/ Crew interviews...I've always fancied doing an inception to completion BTS doc...

I always feel that movies now a days don't have enough BTS. It's annoying! The movie that I think has the best BTS is Bad Boys II. They have an entire DVD filled with scene breakdowns and so many things. It pretty much includes everything people said here. I just bought the DVD Behind Enemy Lines and I was so excited to watch the BTS when it turned out to be like 7 minutes. I got so mad!
