Canon vs. Nikon

I have been looking at a few digital cameras and I have come down to about two: I want to either get a Canon 30d or a nikon d70. One of my questions is: Can I get better image quality by using the excess money I would have spent on the Canon to get lenses for the Nikon. Or, should I stick with the Canon and use the stock lense it comes with.

Thanks

If it were me, I'd get the Nikon. But I'm partial to Nikon as I've got the D200 and really like it.

Get your hands on both and try them out -- even if it just in a store.

Really good glass always makes a difference.

The 30D is priced in-between the D70s and the D200.

I went for the D200 with no regrets.

Check out images on pBase for a partial answer to your question . . .

Hey guys-
Thanks for the input. I think I will go to a store and check those out. One other question though- I have some older manual focus lenses that I like and would those still fight the Canon?

That's a great thing about the Nikon. I can use my older manual lenses from my film Nikon, on my D200. Of course, they're still manual :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Well, I was actually talking about my old Canon manual focus lenses. Will those still work w/ a new canon?

Nikon HAD the market in the 35mm film world however Canon has leaped ahead of them all in the digital film world. I have a 350D aka rebel XT. This slr has the same frame size as the 30d and a few less features however takes the same photos using the same lens choice. If features is what you desire get the 30D, if price is a factor, 350D. If you have more money and want full frame the 5D is the newest full frame camera out there.

Many digital Nikon users went that was as they had exisiting Nikon lens's.

As you all know Canon makes better glass.

Go Canon all the way man

Next time you watch some kind of news conference or sports event look at the lenses of the photographers. Look for those black and white lenses, those are Canon users.

Canon is a good camera, and many professional photographers use it. In my humble opinoin, Canon seems to be a forerunner when it comes to digital photography.

I'm a little miffed at Nikon for not makeing a full frame digital slr. If you have been shooting all your life in a 35mm format it just feels right that your Depth of Field should be the same in digital. So I will say good bye to my Nikons soon and go with Cannon. Probibly just before Nikon comes up with a full frame digital slr.

To answer your question bfischinger , no you can't use your old Canon MF canon lenses on your Digital or any EF mount Canon for that matter. There is an adapter but it's really not worth the hasses, the old Canon lenses are som much different that you lose alot of options like infinity focus and you add an extra piece of glass in there.
I personally prefere canon to nikon, but that's just me. I have seen nice things from both manufacturers, but just becuase alot of people use canon lenses doesn't necesarily mean they have better glass, Nikon makes some really nice lenses that give Canons a run for their money.
Personally if these are the two cameras you are looking at, the 30D is a better camera than the D70. The 30D is more in the class of the D200, although less resolution. But here is what I would reccomend, you can't take photos without lenses, and the type of lense you use makes up 90% of how good your digital photograph turns out. Good glass can really make a camera shine, so keep that in mind with your purchase.

Thank You for all that answered the thread. I haven't really responded to this thread that much, so, sorry about that. But, I have made my decision and I am probably going to go with a canon 20d or 30d. I wish I could afford something like the 5d, but thats out of my range for the time being. Do any of you know a good camera store in so cal or a website that sells a 20 or 30d for a good price?

Thanks Again!

BUYDIG is fantastic. No tax, no shipping and they are fast! They give a fantastic price. That are really great. Trust me. Check 'em out.

Go the 30d, all the nikon digital SLR pictures look slightly soft in my opinion... Still awesome picture quality, but not as sharp as the Canon, BOOM! :)

Nikon did not dominate the 35mm pro market. It used to in the seventies, but after Canon F1 came out Nikon started to slip behind, the last nail was Canon EOS-1, which was in features and ergonomics way out front compared to Nikon F series.

In digital Canon sprinted even more ahead. The reason? Canon was not only a camera company, but also a big name in office machines; printers, copiers, scanners etc. This meant they had plenty of elecronics and digital image knowledge inhouse. Their sensors, processors and electronics coupled to the time tested EOS-1 ergonomics has proven to be a winner.

In optics Nikon and Canon are about equal, even though Canon has more new inventions which make lenses smaller.

I'm the owner of a D50, which is based of the D70 (albeit with less features) but a couple of the things I've noticed in the Canon / Nikon debate:

- I think the Nikon is easier to hold than the Canon
- Glass on the Canon is less expensive (about 20% across the board)
- Overall image quality is hardly different

That is about it. Which to choose? Sort of up to you. I spoke with a couple of people before I ended up getting this camera as a gift of sorts and in general I was told that the Nikon was a bit sharper than the Canon. At the end of the day, I love my Nikon, but the cost difference in glass makes me think that the Canon could have been a better option (example: 1.8 50mm lens, Canon $80, Nikon $120)

Now that I've decide on a Canon what is the main diffrence between the 20d and 30d? I've heard that the 30d has more manual controls while the 20d is more consumer based. But , besides that, (if its correct) what are the main diffrences between them?

We went for the 30D - wonderful camera, no regrets!

My understanding is that the 20D is the forerunner to the 30D and that there is and that apparently the 30D is every bit as good as the awesome 20D except the new 30D has "...the much needed SPOT exposure mode" according to a magazine I read.

Hope you enjoy it

Steve
