I need to get two mounted mics for both of these cameras...one for each. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks.

Hi Alan,

Thank you for your post.

Unfortunately, you have not given us anywhere near enough information to give you an educated answer. So, first I recommend you read the sticky posts at the top of the forum. These will give you a great overview and help you to understand the information we need.

Because, with no information, my recommendation is to not consider mounting microphones on the camera. You will not get usable audio.

See, more information may help.

Well, of course boom or lavalier would give better sound, but there are times when you just have to use a camera mounted mic ENG style (you are alone, no time for mic placement, stealth shooting etc). In many news or documentary situations this is the only possibility.

I have used Rode NTG-1 with Rode shock mount and Rode deadcat on the DVX100 mic holder and it works OK. Quite cheap, too. If you want to lessen the camera noise use mini-rover side grip and Rycote softie system with the mic.

Petrus,

Of course I knew that there are times when an on-board mic is a viable option. My point here was that asking a question like that with no details is like saying what light should I get...or a hundred other other open ended questions like this that have no context and therefore cannot be answered with any reasonable credibility. And, if we had details, we could potentially come up with other viable options instead of on-board mics.

(BTW, one of my favorite television shows right now is using on-board mics - 416's, along with lavs across the board...the show is Deadliest Catch -- and the sound is excellent, especially given the working conditions.)

I was trying to give a simple and cheap solution which works in most situations (NTG-1 is a hyper/shotgun hybrid thing, it works 80% of the time). If a person needs* and can afford specific mics for a given situation he/she would not ask here...

*) if he knows that already, he already knows more than 98% of us. :-)

no offence meant to anybody
