PCM or MPEG audio?

Whats the pros and cons? I am using MPEG audio right now, but my Adobe Audition asks if I want to continue without PCM audio... is PCM better?

1) Are you making a DVD?
- PCM: better quality
- MPEG: not that good sound quality but more compatibility for set top players.
2) Are you working only with audio data?
- Of course PCM

PCM is huge, and unneccesary. The vast majority of the DVDs you watch are AC3, and that is 192k. Going PCM wastes valuable space, and you can't even do surround with it.

Also, some home DVD players don't like PCM, and you can have audio problems. I simply export the audio as a AC3, and ther's never a problem. The sound is great, and the files are much smaller, which means, less compression on your video.

I think that AC3 (Dolby Digital) is best for your project. Why? Because MPEG audio (MP2) is rearly supported on NTSC players and PCM is a waste of space.
DVD specification says that your DVD-s total bitrate can't be more than 9800kb/s (including audio) or it's not supported on most players. One stream (stereo) PCM audio takes 1536kb/s so video has to be no more than 8200kb/s. 4 streams of PCM makes video much worse...only 3600kb/s is allowed!
But 4 streams of AC3 audio (192kb/s) takes only 768kb/s and for video remains approx. 9000kb/s. Good quality as you see. However for best compatibility with different DVD players your max. video bitrate shoult be 8000kb/s.
You don't hear quality difference of 192kb/s AC3 or PCM audio.

Much numbers but I hope you understand.
