Hollywood Hack Composers

I really like John Debney's stuff.... I'm out of the "I like John William's scores" time of my life... problem is I can guess its HIS score 95% of the time, because he uses a lot of the same feels to his stuff. The guy who did the music for The Island is really great...

Just when I thought nothing that I read around here would surprise me...

Seriously, though...thanks for proving me wrong.

Let's sum up some of the nuggets of wisdom that have been posted, shall we?

-O.J. is a great American
-American Filmmakers = boy bands
-Spielberg is a hack, Vincent Gallo is a genius
-John Lennon = greeting card writer
-French filmmakers = far superior

Somebody please remind me not to ever again say, "I can die now, I've heard it all" because for poo poo's sake...I'll be proven wrong when the bar is yet again raised...ah...er...lowered....ahhhh...whatever by another nugget.
Again I was proven wrong.
Now to this archival list of inexplainable statements made by some dvxusers I must add a few more for the ages...

John Williams = Hack
James Horner = Hack
Hans Zimmer = Hack

Tune in next week folks...to see what they'll say next.

 WTF is the matter with people?!

wow.. brutal. :)

I suppose its really all a matter of guilty pleasures in what type of music you are searching for and finding a formula within a score that has proven to work. I think the guys you mentioned have found their own formula and they stick to it.
My stuff is over the top epic with lots of drums and horns with massive lush strings, but the same time, i'll bust out some crazy ambience that's off the wall out there. (which, you can hear in my DVX entry)

I do agree with you Callaghan... Horner's a Hack of himself. I suppose if you were to hack someone, its cool to 'hack yourself'.

I'm curious.. who's your favorite composer/muscian? And... Does the music stand alone without the movie attached to it?

Callaghan-

IMO, by far one of my favorite posts of yours. Excellent stuff.

Glad I didn't come across the stuff in your previous quote...aka. John Lennon=greeting card writer. Sheesh!

Just so I am clear...
I was commenting on the ridiculous of various ludicrous posts that I have come across...not agreeing with them in any bloody way, shape or form.

This makes no sense man.. You put together a list of hack'd people. I'm talking about posts within this topic?

and again, i'm curious.. What musician/composer is not a hack in your book?

Well, for starters, he's saying that John Williams, James Horner and Hans Zimmer are NOT hacks*. If the only thing James Horner ever did was Braveheart, he could die a happy man. Ditto, Hans Zimmer and Gladiator. And John Williams' body of work is mind boggling.

* definition of hack: [from Wikipedia] Nonetheless, in one vernacular usage, a hack is a person lacking talent or ability. The word has been adopted (in British English) as a self-deprecating self-description by journalists.

wowa... now I'm really confused. From what I've just read, he is in fact calling these guys hacks. or am I missing something? looks like alphabet math to me. abc = abc.

ahhhhh yes. Everyone needs to have a one hit wonder.

I don't know how much clearer this can be... He is saying that its ludicrious that people think Horner, Williams, and Zimmer are hacks. In fact they are the top 3 of composers in my book. I'm a music ed minor and all their scores are beautiful. The Munich score was phenomenal... Braveheart, Gladiator, Star Wars, Indiana Jones just to name a few phenomonal scores.

So to clarify, Callaghan loves Williams, Horner, and Zimmer. They are the top 3 greatest composers in my book.

I dont' know about you guys... but the word "Hack" in my book has a really bad conotation. Hack to me means someone who's cutting, chopping, dicing something up. Destroying something. So, If John Williams is a 'Hack' hence the "="... ya. It's as clear as purple crayon to me. :)

Unless you think Hack is that he's beating and killing the competition?

Callaghan's post is filled with sarcasm. He is adding the fact that he feels someone is referring to Williams, Horner and Zimmer as hacks to some other quotes that have been bandied about on this board in other threads fairly recently:

-O.J. is a great American
-American Filmmakers = boy bands
-Spielberg is a hack, Vincent Gallo is a genius
-John Lennon = greeting card writer
-French filmmakers = far superior

After reading the above, he thought he'd seen it all, then someone comes along and basically says:

John Williams = Hack
James Horner = Hack
Hans Zimmer = Hack

so they were added to the list of outrageous statements.

Hope that clears it up...:)

ha!!!

*Smacks head*

OK. I guess being a noob I'm not familiar with Callaghan's sarcasm. Totaly makes sense. THere for a bit, I was like.. wtf ? NO way is Williams a Hack. :)

I don't think Zimmer was mentioned as a hack either was he? I'll have to go back and re-read this whole thing. Horner.. well, you love him and you can hate him. I just think the title of this thread has given the thread a 'bad taste' right at the git go.
