There was this pm between me and Kyle:

I have more questions for Kyle: do you use Silhouette? Do you make one mask over the object or many? For you how boring rotoscoping is from 1 to ten?

Hey man-

Ya it was actually just rotoscoped. I just did another version for the same series on ATV's you can check out here:

Feel free to make this a public thread, as i've had multiple people ask me about that spot...

To answer your questions, no I don't use Silhouette. Normally when masking I'll use one matte if it's not too complex to pull, othertimes (like on the atv's) i'll use a few and break it down by part (front tires, body, rider, etc).

As far as how boring roto is... it's probably an 11 on the scale. That's why I have helpers to do it for me :) :) :)

I love that spot. Especially where the rider is revealed through the gear shapes. Quicktime is great because you can watch a piece a frame at a time and really appreciate how complex it is.

Maybe someday when work slows down you could give us a breakdown of a piece like that. Or make a DVD and call it the Kyle Stauffer Perception. I'd buy it.

Hey not a bad idea! Maybe I could include the project files for certain projects in a tutorial fashion. Not a bad idea at all... :)

I'd buy one. How many people and how long did that spot take to produce?

Great stuff (as usual):dankk2:

The snowmobiling spot originally took about a week of off & on tweaking, with myself doing the design and animation, and a helper doing roto.

The ATV version took about 2 days with myself doing the design/animation and 2 people helping with roto.

so nearly you did everything

I was commenting on that open this AM when we watched the show on ESPN2. I worked that show in KY and was really impressed with how it all worked. I knew D. Bruner and Co. would make it happen. Nice job Kai!

Ha ya good ol dave. Great producer :)
