Brevis 35 Production Tests: XL1s, XL2, DVX, HVX, VX2100

Well, after expending the Canadian long weekend working on these things, Raf, yours and three others are packed up and ready for shipping tomorrow.

Worlds most affordable 72mm fully coated achromat??

Worlds most affordable 72mm fully coated achromat??

Well folks, achromat #1, fully coated, 72mm has arrived. It looks very, very good. My initial tests show that it's performance in terms of magnification is just a tiny bit less than an asian +10, although it's focal length is technically much "weaker". What it does have is far less distortion and CA, and this is immediately noticeably magnifying text. More testing/footage this weekend.

How good is it?

These were taken using the GS400 stills feature, through the Brevis, with the Asian10 attached, then the Cinevate achromat. Res gain is approx 100 lines. Lens used was 50mm F1.4 Minolta set at F/1.4, GS400 at F4. Tripod and cam was left alone, I just swapped in the macros, and adjusted zoom a tiny bit to frame similarly. Keep in mind that these are stills shot through a 43mm lens. Bigger cams would see an even larger difference at the edges.

I can't download it. "Can't open file: 'downloadkey.MYI'. (errno: 145)". Tried mozilla and internet explorer.

It looks sharper than the footage I've seen with the asian macro. It would be nice to see some skintone too.

There's also a marked reduction in chromatic aberrations. The original footage XL1s footage posted with "cheap" macros garnered some criticism in terms of its softness. After posting the res test of asian 10+ vs the cinevate achro, I've seen enough. In that test (low res stills) there's a near 100 line resolution hit using the singlet macro. Combined with very noticeable CA, I can't recommend ever using them. In fact, until testing both, I never would have believed the difference.

The 60th

The 60th

A few folks have been clamoring for footage with real people in it...so here ya go.

Footage is from a GS400 (no achromat) in procinema mode.

Lens is an F2.8 28-70 (Minolta) zoom. I had to put an ND .6 filter on the 35mm lens to bring the cam down from F16.

Other than flip and some slo-mo, nothing has been done in post.

Thanks Robert.

In comparing adapter footage to film tests, I'm pretty convinced that I'm seeing considerably increased latitude. This has been observed by others using adapters, and is seldom discussed. It's something I've been trying to put my finger on for awhile, and finally started to quantify it in comparative film testing. Certainly at sunset, with partial lighting, getting adequate exposure can be a challenge.

You're right, Dennis. The increase in latitude is very clear. I'm very glad, because it's one of things I really look for in a 35mm adapter is the increase in latitude. What a marvelous bonus it is. Shallow dof AND more latitude.

this reminds me of a very heated thread on the cinemek forum

somthing of a fight between incresing latitude and "percived latitude"

if the forum was still up id link you, but they havent bothered :-\
